Riley didn’t have time to hear her out. She took one look at Melissa–pale, struggling, barely conscious–and made her choice. She pulled out her phone and dialed 911 without a second thought.
Seconds later, the sharp wail of sirens cut through the air. Paramedics rushed in with a stretcher and carefully carried Melissa out.
Riley didn’t hesitate. She jumped into the ambulance and went with her.
As the ambulance screamed toward the hospital, Riley pulled out her phone and called Zavier and Raymond.
But all she got was the same robotic voicemail message. They were probably both in meetings and hadn’t taken their phones with them.
The ambulance finally pulled up to the emergency entrance of Nexopolis Central Hospital.
The doors swung open, and the medics quickly unloaded Melissa, wheeling her gurney straight into the resuscitation room.
Riley followed behind, watching the white coats rush past her in every direction.
Then, the heavy doors to the resuscitation room slammed shut in her face. A harsh red light flickered on above them.
A nurse stopped Riley right there and told her to go handle the paperwork.
She took the stack of forms, calmly paid the deposit, filled everything out, and got it all done without a hitch.
Once the paperwork was finished, she went back to the resuscitation room doors and sat down on a bench in the hallway.
She thought about calling Elsie.
After all, Elsie really loves her.
If something happened to Melissa, Elsie should be here.
But Riley didn’t have Elsie’s number.
Forget it.
The minutes dragged by, slow and heavy.
People walked back and forth–anxious, heartbroken, desperate. But Riley just sat there, quiet, like she wasn’t really part of any of
More than an hour later, the red light finally went off.
A doctor came out.
His eyes swept the hallway–then landed on Riley, who had stood up.
“She’s stable now,” the doctor said, cutting straight to the point. “It was acute anaphylaxis. Shortness of breath, shock. You got her here in time. If you’d waited much longer, it could’ve been bad.”
Riley’s eyes narrowed slightly at the words.

The doctor noticed. “As for what caused it—we’ll need to run more tests to be sure. For now, she’s being moved to a regular room for observation.”
The nurses wheeled Melissa out of the resuscitation room and into a quiet private room
She was still unconscious, but her color looked better. Her breathing was steadier now, too.
Riley stood by the bed and quietly studied the woman who was technically her mother.
Outside, the sky had gone dark without her noticing.
She checked her phone. It was almost time to head to the Torres Mansion for dinner with Sebastian.
But her biological mother was lying here in a hospital bed, still out cold. No matter how at peace she might feel about it, Riley knew she couldn’t just walk away right now.
Riley thought for a moment, then took her phone, stepped out of the room, and gently pulled the door shut behind her.
She walked to the window at the end of the hallway and called Sebastian.
But she didn’t notice that right as her figure disappeared past the door, Melissa’s eyelids fluttered–just barely.
The call went through fast. Sebastian’s deep, smooth voice came through the receiver. “Riley.”
“Sebastian. Sorry, but I probably can’t make it tonight.” Riley got straight to the point. “My mom–she collapsed. We’re at the hospital now.”
