That said a lot. Her heart had probably already moved on from that hopeless crush a while ago. She just had troced yet. Bickering with Colin and loving every second of it was way more fun than chasing some cold, distant guy wh back
Justin watched Audrey flailing around and pressed his hand to his forehead
He’d been worried she’d do something to put Sebastian in an awkward spot or make Riley ancomfortable, inoking at he’d been stressing over nothing
“Okay. Audrey. Enough.” Justin cut into their grade–school fight. “Didn’t you say you came to grab wine for your dad? Did you get
Audrey just remembered why she was actually there. A guilty flicker crossed her eyes. “Not yet. I got distracted tracking down t
cockroach.”
Colin jumped in with a greasy smirk. “Well, look at that. Ms. Brooks and her razor–sharp efficiency. Your dad would probably regres sending you if he knew you got lost picking a fight before you even made it past the front door.”
“Colin!” Audrey glared at him, teeth clenched.
Wesley cleared his throat and stepped in, his voice gentle. “Since you’re here, sit down and have a drink.” He pulled out a chair for Audrey and shot Justin a look.
Audrey stared at the chair Wesley offered. She was tempted. Then she remembered her dad–the guy who loved wine more than life and had a temper to match. She forced herself to stop.
“Drink what? Can’t you see I’m holding my car keys?” Audrey gave Wesley an exasperated look, then turned her death glare back onto Colin. “Besides, staring at that face of yours would turn the best red wine into vinegar. My dad’s waiting for me to bring back two bottles of ’82 Petrus to guard the house. If I’m even one minute late, he’ll strip every grapevine in the garden bare.”
She tugged at her hair in an awkward little gesture and let her gaze flicker over Sebastian and Riley one last time. Then she spun on her heel and walked out of the room without looking back.
Once she was gone, Colin drained his glass in one bitter gulp, like the wine was Audrey herself and he needed to crush it between his teeth. “Justin, I’m seriously starting to think you talk trash about me to Audrey every single day. Otherwise, why does she look at me like I murdered her dad? I’m the most gorgeous, charming bachelor in all of Nexopolis, and to her I’m a cockroach? That level of bias is insane!”
Justin’s reply came out flat and cold. “Usually when this happens, I suggest you take a good hard look in the mirror first.”
Audrey crashing in had been a weird little detour, but after she left, the vibe in the room didn’t sink. It got looser. Way more relaxe
Everyone stopped forcing the boring business talk and started digging up Sebastian’s embarrassing school stories instead. Riley listened, completely entertained. She glanced at Sebastian now and then. The guy who was always so guarded around other people had a quiet smile sitting in his eyes.
By the time they called it a night, the Nexopolis sky was thick with stars.
