her up, Audrey looked
eyes burning hot again. “So I thought of you! You’d crush it, no question. Just win it for me. Think of it as a clean, classy end to my stupid one–sided crush. After that, I’m done. I swear I won’t think about him again.”
She looked at Riley, and for the first time, her eyes held something real. Respect.
“I mean it, Riley.” Audrey’s voice got serious. Actually serious. “I never got how someone like Sebastian could pick you. But after last night and today, I’m starting to see it. You’re solid. You come off cold, but you know exactly what you’re doing.
“You’re really good at games. And the biggest thing–you don’t do that petty girl–fight crap. You’ve got class. If Sebastian chose you, then fine. I’ve got nothing to be bitter about.”
It was the first time Audrey had been that honest about losing. She’d actually looked the winner in the eye and said it.
Riley watched her. The same Audrey who’d been sobbing into the phone last night was standing here now, letting go and saying it out loud.
Riley paused, thinking it over.
Audrey saw the silence and started to panic. She couldn’t let her back out.
She grabbed her last shot and leaned in, her eyes blazing. “Just think about it! It’s something Sebastian spent forever trying to find and never could! Don’t you want to be the one who hands it to him? Don’t you want to see his face on his birthday? Don’t you want to do something for him?”
The words “birthday” hit. Riley thought for a beat. “What’s the address?”
the
“Yes!” Audrey practically launched out of her chair. She whipped out her phone, pulled up address, and shoved it in front of Riley. “It’s at Cyber Nest, over by the university district on the east side! The tournament is this weekend, in the afternoon. I already signed you up under my name. You just have to show up!”
“Cyber Nest…” Riley stared at the familiar street name on the screen. Something flickered in her eyes, and she went still for a second.
Audrey caught it right away.
“What?” She leaned in, curious. “Is something wrong with that place? You’ve been there?”

Riley pulled her gaze off the phone. Something complicated shifted behind her eyes. “That gaming place is right near my college campus.”
“College?” Audrey’s gossip radar lit up. “So you went to Kindred University? That’s literally the best school in Nexopolis!”
“Yeah.” Riley corrected her without missing a beat. “Master’s program. But right before graduation, I went to Havenbrook University as an exchange student. I wrapped up my thesis defense and all the paperwork over there, and I ended up staying in Havenbrook for work after that.”
Audrey’s jaw dropped.
Her brain instantly replayed something Justin had told her. “Don’t underestimate Riley just because she came from outside the family. Even without the Harper name, she’s legit. Don’t go poking at her.”
Audrey had rolled her eyes back then and figured Justin was just talking up the other side.
Now she got it. Justin had actually undersold it. A bachelor’s from Kindred University was enough to land a solid job at any top firm in Nexopolis. A master’s? Plus getting picked as an exchange student to Havenbrook University? That was a whole different league.
It hit her right then. The gap between her and Riley had never been about some guy.
She’d lost a fight that was never fair to begin with. And honestly, she couldn’t even be mad about it.
Audrey was not a wait–around type. The second Riley said yes, she couldn’t sit still another minute. She grabbed Riley and pulled her out the door.
Her bright red Ferrari ripped through the streets of Nexopolis, the engine roaring between the glass towers.
