Chapter 421 Because She Forgot

The second the question left her mouth, Riley regretted it.

He got up from the floor without a word. His frame blocked the light, casting a shadow over her where she crouched. In that moment, the pressure rolling off him was unlike anything she’d ever felt before. His eyes pinned her in place, as if he were trying to look straight through her.

Riley’s stomach dropped. She scrambled backward on her hands, convinced she’d stepped on a landmine. “I was just asking! If you don’t want to talk about it, forget it. Pretend I never said anything. I won’t be weird about it.”

She tried to scramble to her feet and bolt, but he bent down and scooped her right off the floor. His arms locked around her waist, and suddenly she was trapped between his body and the console behind her.

The space between them vanished. She could see her own startled reflection in his eyes, feel his breath warm against her forehead.

Then he looked straight at her and spoke, one word at a time.

“Because she forgot.”

It hit her like a thunderclap. Her brain seized, and a spike of pain shot through her skull. Something fractured and flickering stirred behind her eyes. Broken images. Disjointed fragments. They tore past too fast to hold onto.

Before she could process it, dizziness crashed over her. Her legs gave out, and she pitched backward.

“Careful!” Sebastian’s voice cut through the fog.

He tightened his arms on instinct, trying to haul her back, but her dead weight pulled them both down.

The world spun. She felt a hand cup the back of her head, firm and protective, and then she slammed into a solid chest. They hit the carpet hard.

No pain came. Sebastian had twisted himself underneath her, his spine and elbows taking every bit of the impact.

Riley lay sprawled on top of him, completely stunned. It took several seconds for her brain to catch up.

Her face went scarlet. She shoved against his chest, trying to push herself up. “I’m so sorry! I lost my footing. Are you okay? Did you get hurt?”

Sebastian’s breathing was rough. The fall had clearly knocked the wind out of him. But the hand cradling her head still hadn’t let go. He took a beat, then forced out, “No.”

She checked him over, confirmed he was in one piece, and tried to scramble off him and end the whole mortifying position. His arms tightened around her waist and pulled her right back down.

“Don’t move.” His voice came out muffled against the top of her head. “Just stay like this. Let me hold

you for a minute.”
