Chapter 449 A Friendly Heads-up
So Logan added one last line and let it hang there. “She’s easy on the eyes, though. You’ll see when she shows up.”

He knew exactly how Stephen handled female clients. Back when they worked side by side, they’d spent countless nights at fancy spots, with Logan always picking up the tab.
Stephen caught his meaning instantly. “Oh, really? Now I’m looking forward to it”
They traded a few more empty words and hung up.
A nasty, twisted smile crawled across Logan’s face.
He thought he’d played it beautifully.

Riley is stupid if she believes she can waltz through Nexopolis on her daddy’s name and have every door swing open. Fine. I’ll make sure she runs straight into a brick wall.
Let her try to act tough when she is dealing with a man whose hands have a way of wandering.
The afternoon came fast. Riley made the trip to Wharfbrook right on schedule.
She walked up to the front desk and told the receptionist why she was there.
“Hello, Ms. Harper.” The receptionist gave her a sweet smile, but her tone was pure brush-off. “Mr. Baker is in a meeting right now. He asks that you wait in the reception area for a bit.”
Riley’s brow pulled tight.
I confirmed this time with Stephen directly. I moved my whole schedule around to make this work. And now he’s suddenly in a meeting?
She didn’t bite. She knew better than to come in hot on unfamiliar ground. She kept her voice level and asked, “About how long?”
The receptionist glanced at her watch and tossed out an answer without much thought. “Oh, ten minutes or so.” Riley nodded and walked over to the seating area. She sat down, pulled out her files, and started reviewing.
Twenty minutes dragged by. No one said a word-no updates, no explanations.
Her patience was fraying fast. She checked her watch, her jaw tightening. This wasn’t a schedule mix-up. This was on purpose.
She was ready to pull out her phone and ring Stephen, furious to demand answers. Just then, a familiar figure stepped off the elevator.
“Ms. Harper?” It was David, the man she and Sebastian had bumped into on their walk the night before.
He looked just as surprised as she was and walked over quickly. “What brings you here? Are you with Mr. Torres?”
Riley blinked, then shook her head. “No. I’m here to meet with someone from a company upstairs. Is Sebastian nearby?”
David nodded. “Yeah, he’s here. We had some business to go over. I think he’s still in his meeting. I figured you two came together. Small world.”

Se Sebastian was in the same building. She opened her mouth to press for more details when the receptionist hurried over, wearing a wire, eager grin
“Ms. Harper, terribly sorry to keep you waiting!” Her earlier dismissive tone was gone, replaced by eager deference. “Mr. Baker’s meeting just wrapped. He’ll see you upstairs now.”
Riley nodded and started to get up.
David’s eyes flicked toward the receptionist, then back to Riley. He glanced around and dropped his voice. “Ms. Harper, just a friendly heads-up. Stephen Baker doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to dealing with female clients. Keep your guard up.”
It all clicked at once. Logan being forced out, Stephen stalling on purpose-everything fell into place.
“Thank you, Mr. Anderson. I appreciate it. I’ll be careful,” Riley said quietly. She gave him a grateful look and turned toward the elevator.
The doors slid shut and carried her up.
A few minutes later, she followed the signs to Stephen’s office.
The door was already open. She spotted him behind his desk-a tall, thin guy in his forties or fifties, phone pressed to his ear.
He wore a fixed pleasant smile, yet the second she walked in, his gaze raked her in a sharp, assessing glance-she spotted it right
away.
