Noah felt the impact run straight through him. Zavier was telling him, in no uncertain terms, to stop leveraging the Cooper family’s relationships to meddle in Harper Group’s internal affairs.

He immediately bowed his head and nodded, his face collapsing into a fawning smile. “Yes, Mr. Harper, you’re absolutely right. I understand.”

He knew there was no salvaging this. He shot Logan a venomous glare, clenched his jaw, and practically dragged him toward the door.

“Move. Get out of here. Stop making a spectacle of yourself,” he hissed, terrified Logan would open his mouth and make things even worse.

Logan stumbled like a puppet whose strings had been cut, dragged out of the office by Noah. He shot Riley one final glare as he stepped over the doorframe, his eyes blazing with bitter

resentment.

Riley met his stare with nothing. Just calm.

Zavier watched the door click shut, then turned to Riley. The hardness in his face melted away

fast.

“Riley, are you settling in over in marketing?” His voice had gone warm. “Anything else you need me to handle?”

She shook her head lightly. “Just don’t let anyone get in my way. You and Raymond included.”

Zavier let out a booming laugh, his eyes shining with open admiration. “Ha! That’s my girl. After today’s little show, I doubt anyone’s going to try.”

He stepped over and gave her a soft pat on the shoulder. “Go handle whatever you’ve got to. Make waves if you need to. No matter what trouble comes your way, I’ve got your back.”

She understood his offer: unwavering support, validation, a father throwing his full weight behind his daughter.

She nodded and glanced at her watch. The afternoon meeting was approaching fast.

“Dad, is there anything else? I need to head out soon.”

Zavier’s smile dimmed slightly. A hint of hesitation crept into his expression, as if he was mulling over words he could not bring himself to say.

After a pause, he finally spoke, “Your mother was discharged from the hospital yesterday. She’s back home.”

Riley’s face, neutral a second ago, flickered at the word “mother.”

Zavier pressed on, “She’s been feeling terrible about the misunderstanding. Hasn’t been able to shake it. She asked me to tell you to bring Sebastian home for dinner sometime. She wants to apologize.”

“Why doesn’t she tell me herself?” Riley’s voice was cold, anger simmering underneath.

Zavier rubbed his hands together, awkward and apologetic. “She’s afraid you won’t hear her out.”

“Afraid I won’t hear her out.” Riley’s mouth twisted. “We have other plans and aren’t available. Tell her that if she has anything to say, she can come to me directly. I’m done with messages passed through others.”

Zavier read the finality on her face and let out a heavy sigh. “Alright. I’ll let her know.”

Riley didn’t linger. She gave him one last look, then turned and walked out.

And Logan, even after being booted from Harper Group, didn’t go quietly.

The resentment and humiliation coiled inside him, gnawing through whatever restraint he had left, until all his rage had a single target. Riley.

He swore she wouldn’t get away with it. He pulled out his phone and dialed Stephen Baker, the project lead for Wharfbrook.

“Hey, Stephen. It’s Logan.” His voice was low and heavy. “Just wanted to give you a heads–up. I’m no longer with Harper Group. Someone new will be taking over the Wharfbrook project. Hope everything goes smoothly on your end.”

Stephen picked up on his tone right away, surprised. Logan had always seemed untouchable in marketing. They’d worked together a handful of times. They weren’t close, but Logan had always been the smooth operator. Why quit all of a sudden?
