Raymond stared at the crying woman in front of him. His mother looked like a stranger now. The cold settled deep in his chest.
“Mom…” He spoke in a daze. “How could you…”
The way he looked at her, the way he said it, made Melissa’s stomach drop. She’d lost control. The suspicion in his eyes was already locked in.
She shoved Raymond away and stumbled backward, pointing at the ceiling. “I swear it! If I ever did something like that, if I did it on purpose, then let me be struck down! Let me die old and alone!” she screamed.
She poured every ounce of fake innocence into her face, her voice scraping raw. “How can you doubt me like this? Based on a few words from Riley? You’ve known me for decades. I’m your wife. I’m your mother. And you believe her over me?!”
She’d abandoned all reason and thrown herself fully into the role of the victim. She couldn’t fight the facts anymore, so she aimed her attack at their lack of faith.
But both men’s faces stayed hard.
Melissa did the only thing left. She turned and fled up the stairs, her sobs echoing behind her. “What’s the point of living anymore?! You all think I’m a monster! I’d rather be dead!”
Her wails bounced through the stairwell. Zavier and Raymond stood frozen below, their minds churning. Everything in front of them had shattered past understanding.
Riley and Sebastian drove home through the deep night. The neon lights of the city couldn’t touch the heavy silence inside the car.
Sebastian kept his eyes on the road, glancing at her now and then. His chest felt tight.
He broke the quiet first.
“Riley, if your mom asks you to come back again, don’t go.” His voice was serious, weighted with care. “There’s no reason to keep walking into that.”
Riley didn’t open her eyes. She just made a soft sound of agreement.
Sebastian kept one hand on the wheel and reached over with the other, resting it gently on top of hers. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have made you go back. I figured since she’s your mother, even if she wasn’t warm, she’d at least keep up appearances. I never expected her to get worse. It’s

Riley let out a dry, hollow laugh. “What’s hard to believe? That’s who she is. I should’ve known a long time ago,” she said.
His face darkened. A sharp glint flickered in his eyes. “So she really did drug you back then… and leave you at the orphanage?”
She rubbed her aching temple and let out a quiet sigh. “Yeah. I was in a car accident a few years ago, and my memory got scrambled again. I couldn’t remember any of it. Then, a little while ago, I found someone from the orphanage. She gave me back some of my old things. There was a diary. It had everything. From before I forgot.”
Sebastian’s fingers paused over her hand. He pulled back a little and slowed the car. When he turned to face her, complex emotions flickered in his eyes. “This diary is from before you lost your memory. Was there anything else inside? Apart from what happened at the orphanage?”
She studied his face, confused. She didn’t understand why he cared so much about the contents of her diary. After a moment, she answered him honestly, “There should be more. But when I got to the part about the orphanage, I couldn’t keep going. It was too much.”
“You should finish it.” His voice came out urgent. “If you keep reading, you might find more. More of what you lost.”
Riley saw the hope in his eyes, and a strange, unreadable feeling tugged at her heart. He cared far too much about that diary. Beneath his words, he seemed to be trying to tell her something.
