In the end, Sebastian just gave a vague answer. “Riley, some answers shouldn’t come from me. The ones you find yourself are the ones that stick.”
The words were heavy with meaning but gave Riley nothing solid to hold onto. They only deepened the questions swirling in her head.
They got home, and Riley felt desperate for an outlet. The diary seemed like the only one left.
She was about to tell Sebastian she’d be in the study finishing it when her phone rang. It was Raymond.
She frowned and picked up. “Raymond? What’s going on?”
His voice came through tired and strained. “Riley… Dad and Mom just had a huge fight. She took Elsie and left. And she said…”
“She said what?” Riley’s chest tightened. A dull throb started at her temples. She already knew what kind of move Melissa was making.
Raymond sighed, “She said she wanted a divorce. She says Dad’s completely on your side now, that he believes everything you say, and there’s no room left for her in this house.”
“I see.” Riley closed her eyes. When she opened them again, her “So what do you want to do?”

cold and flat.
She assumed the subtext of his call was a plea for her to back down-go apologize to Melissa, coax her back, and stop things from getting uglier.
Raymond’s answer caught her off guard.
“I’m not calling to ask you to fix this. I just wanted you to know. Dad thinks that if she wants to leave, let her go. It’s been this way for years. Whenever things don’t go her way, she threatens to burn the whole house down. Dad’s worn out.”
Riley paused. She hadn’t expected Zavier and Raymond to hold the line this firmly.
“Okay. Got it,” she said quietly.
“Don’t overthink it.” Raymond’s voice softened. “The family banquet for your return is in a few days. Even if Mom stays mad and doesn’t show up, it won’t matter. We’ll just say she’s not feeling well and resting at home. You’re the one this is about. Don’t let any of this get in your head.”

Then her phone buzzed again. It was a new message. She opened it and saw it was from the private investigator she’d hired.
“Ms. Harper, I have preliminary results on Melissa’s background. Sending the file now.”
Riley tucked her phone away and called out to Sebastian in the living room. “I’ll be in the study.”
He nodded, his eyes following her with a look that bordered almost on anticipation. He figured she would read the diary.
But when she sat down at the desk, she didn’t open it. She pulled up the file the investigator had sent.
She had always thought it odd. Zavier indulged Melissa completely, giving her whatever she asked for. Even so, she acted as if he were invisible. He only meant anything to her when she wanted something from him.
The file finally gave her the answer.
Long before marrying Zavier, Melissa had loved another man deeply. And she never managed to let him go.
His name was Richard Griffin. In a world built on family status and connections, he’d had nothing. No money, no name, no leverage.
For Melissa’s family, who needed a marriage alliance to lock in their position, he was an absolute impossibility.
Her grandfather had crushed it without mercy. He’d driven Richard out of Kingston and severed every tie between them.
Zavier had been the match her family picked for her. He’d fallen for Melissa the moment he saw her, completely taken by her beauty and fire.
Melissa had never wanted this marriage to begin with. As the years passed, Richard’s shadow only grew stronger in the quiet depths of her heart.
When Raymond was three and Melissa was pregnant again, she’d managed to track Richard down without anyone knowing.
