The timing was almost too precise. Richard died one month before Riley went missing.
Riley stared at the dates on the screen, her breathing turning shallow and uneven. She scrolled further and stopped on a photo of Elsie as a child.
Elsie wasn’t some orphan whose parents had died and left her with nothing. She was Richard’s daughter.
After he died, Melissa had gone to his widow with a deal. A massive sum of money in exchange for the bond between mother and child. The woman took the payout and disappeared overseas, and Melissa brought Elsie back to the Harper family as if she were her own.
Riley didn’t need to read the rest. Every unanswered question, every look of deep-seated disgust Melissa had ever aimed at her, snapped into place with perfect, horrifying logic.
In Melissa’s twisted mind, Riley’s birth was the reason she hadn’t been there to save Richard. It was why she’d missed her chance to find him a doctor who could’ve kept him alive. It was the reason they’d been torn apart forever.
So she’d poured all the love she still had for Richard straight into Elsie. He’d never gotten to live a life of comfort, so his daughter would have everything.
But Riley was the one standing in the way. Zavier adored his clever, sharp-eyed little girl. As long as Riley was there, Elsie would always be an afterthought, a charity case tucked into the corner. She’d never inherit the Harper family’s resources, never truly take the place that should have been hers.
So Melissa’s mind had twisted around one conclusion: Riley had to disappear. Only then could Elsie step into her spot. Only then could Richard’s daughter become the Harper family’s rightful heiress and claim everything that should have been Riley’s.
Riley sank back and closed her eyes. A subtle, unbidden shudder shook her. Everything was simply too absurd.
She’d thought Melissa was cold and biased, perhaps even incapable of love. She never imagined her own mother would drug her and abandon her at an orphanage for another man’s child.
A long while later, the study door opened. Riley walked out, her face tight with everything she was still holding in.
Sebastian was on the couch. He stood when he saw her, his eyes searching her face. “Riley, did

Riley let out a long breath. Looking at him, the man who’d stayed beside her through all of it, she felt the tangled weight inside her start to loosen.
They were legally and truly married. She didn’t want to carry this alone.
She pulled out her phone, pulled up the investigator’s file, and sent it to him.
“I haven’t read the rest of the diary yet. But right now, this matters more. I sent it to you. I want you to see it,” she said.
Sebastian took the phone and opened the file. As he scrolled, his brow pulled tighter and tighter. Disbelief and fury flickered behind his eyes.
