Sebastian took her hand, enveloping her cool fingers in his warm palm. From his pocket, he produced a cool metal ring and, in the dim glow filtering through the window, slipped it gently and deliberately onto her ring finger.
“Now we can keep going forward together.”
The next moment, Riley felt herself lifted off the ground as he scooped her into his arms. He strode toward the bedroom, holding her steady.
“Since we’re finally on the same page,” he murmured against her ear, “I think I’m entitled to collect my reward.”
The sudden intimacy sent heat creeping up her cheeks. She looped her arms around his neck to steady herself, but still fretted over the gown she was wearing–the one his parents had chosen with such care. “This dress is special to your parents. Don’t… don’t ruin it.”
Sebastian let out a low chuckle, lowering her gently onto the plush bed. He leaned in and pressed a hot, restrained kiss to her delicate collarbone. “I’ll be careful.”
The next morning, Riley woke to warm sunlight streaming through the curtains. The beside her was empty; she could hear faint sounds of water from the bathroom.

She rolled over once in the soft sheets, then stretched out her hand, letting the light catch the ring on her finger. It wasn’t a flashy, over–the–top diamond–the design was understated and elegant, with a center stone that caught the morning rays and scattered them into brilliant sparks.
Turning her hand, she spotted two tiny initials engraved on the inside: S&R.
Soon, the bathroom door opened and Sebastian emerged. She noticed a matching band on his left ring finger.
Propping herself up against the headboard, she tilted her head with amusement. “So from now on, I’m officially known to all of Nexopolis as Mrs. Torres?”
Sebastian raised an eyebrow, his expression answering the question.
Riley grabbed her phone from the bedside table. Within seconds, headlines from major news platforms flooded her screen, pushing notifications one after another.
Below the articles were high–definition photos from last night’s banquet. Sebastian holding her close, gazing at her with unmistakable tenderness.

Since it was a rare day off, Riley had planned to spend the entire day at home with Sebastian, savoring their precious time alone.
But then Lucas called.
Riley glanced at Sebastian, who was peeling an orange beside her, and answered anyway. Lucas’s voice on the other end sounded hoarse and tired. He said he was leaving for Havenbrook soon and hoped to see her one last time before he went.
She paused for a moment. The past was already settled; whether she saw him or not didn’t really matter anymore.
After a brief thought, she agreed. Some things were better closed in person.
When she hung up, she told Sebastian about the request. He fed her a plump segment of orange and said casually, “I’ll come with you.”
Seeing her look at him, he added with a smile, “I won’t join you to meet him. I’ll wait outside, drop you off and pick you up.”
His confidence came not from jealousy, but from complete trust. She found herself thinking that after she finished with Lucas, the two of them could take the chance to have a proper date.
She chose a café near their home for the meeting.
Sebastian pulled up in front of the mall, unbuckled her seatbelt, and leaned over to kiss her forehead. “I’ll be right here in the car.”
“Okay.”
When Riley walked into the café, Lucas was already there. He looked even more haggard than the last time she’d seen him.
On the table sat a beautifully packaged box of pastries. As soon as he spotted her, he stood up, nervous and hopeful.
“Riley, this is that pastry you used to talk about all the time when we were in Havenbrook. I… I went and got it for you.”
