Soon enough, they embraced her management style–decisive and demanding when needed, yet considerate when it counted. The department’s cohesion and efficiency hit unprecedented highs.
After being shut out by her own family, reality finally forced Melissa to bend.
Money was her backbone, the foundation of her glamorous life. When her bank cards turned into worthless plastic and Elsie began shooting her pleading, impatient looks, the cracks in Melissa’s stubbornness widened.
She, too, was terrified of losing everything and tumbling from grace into the mud.
After several sleepless nights, she made a reluctant concession.
But this compromise wasn’t born of genuine remorse. To her, it was strategy.
She instructed her lawyer to drag out the divorce proceedings while she clumsily prepared what she believed to be the most effective weapon: tenderness and sentiment.
Men always clung to old memories, didn’t they? If she humbled herself, acted gentle and caring, surely he’d soften–for the sake of their years together and their son Raymond.
That day, Melissa lowered herself to prepare a lovingly packed lunch for Zavier. She even made two extra portions, one for Raymond and one for Riley, to show what a fair, devoted mother she could be.
Armed with false confidence and carefully styled, she arrived at the Harper Group headquarters.
The building still stood as one of Nexopolis’s landmarks–imposing and grand. But today, as she walked in, the receptionist’s smile remained professional, yet the flicker of pity in her eyes stung Melissa to the core.
She forced herself to carry the dignity and strode toward the executive elevator. While waiting, she caught two clerks whispering nearby.
“I heard Mr. Harper just hired a new assistant–young, gorgeous, and from a top–tier university…”
“No way? He’s swapping assistants at a time like this?”
“Exactly. She’s always hovering around his office, this little vixen…”
Melissa’s brain short–circuited.
Alarm bells screamed in her head.
He was divorcing her, and now he’d replaced his assistant with some young beauty? Was this his way of humiliating her, or had he already moved on?
Rage incinerated the fragile facade of warmth she’d built.
All pretense of composure abandoned, the moment the elevator doors opened, she marched straight up to the chairman’s floor,
The secretary jumped up and tried to block her politely. “Mrs. Harper, Mr. Harper is resting at the moment

Melissa wasn’t listening. All she could think about was catching him in the act. She shoved past the secretary, didn’t bother knocking, and threw the office door open.
The blinds were drawn, leaving the room dim. She spotted Zavier dozing on the sofa in the lounge area.
And beside him was a strange young woman!
She looked barely over twenty, with long hair framing a delicate face, dressed in a tasteful business suit that accentuated her slender figure. At that moment, she was leaning over, a thin blanket in hand, apparently about to drape it over Zavier.
In Melissa’s eyes, the scene twisted into something obscene.
Wasn’t this exactly the cliché from every drama; the mistress seizing her chance to play the caring temptress?
Her reason evaporated.
She charged forward without thinking.
Slap!
The crisp, vicious blow landed squarely on the young woman’s cheek.
The girl stood frozen, stunned.
“You shameless hussy!” Melissa shrieked, jabbing a finger at her. “Look at yourself; who do you think you are? He’s old enough to be your father! How low can you sink!”
