Melissa’s tirade died in her throat. She froze, momentarily unable to process what she’d just heard.
Zavier rose from the sofa and strode over, his voice barely containing his fury. “Melissa, this is my third brother Edgar’s youngest daughter, Peyton Harper. She just came back from studying abroad and is interning at the company. What exactly did you think she was!”
Peyton Harper?
Melissa turned stiffly and studied the tear–streaked face more closely. Now she could vaguely make out a hint of Edgar Harper’s features in the girl’s delicate face.
It came back to her; Peyton had gone overseas for further studies a decade ago and had rarely returned since. Melissa, proud and dismissive of the Harper family’s extended branches, had never bothered to remember anyone’s face or name beyond the senior elders.
The truth was laid bare.
Melissa opened her mouth, offering a reluctant apology to Peyton, still muttering under her breath, “Well… you should have said so earlier. How was I supposed to know…?”
The insincerity of it only stoked Zavier’s anger further.
He couldn’t be bothered to argue with her anymore. Turning to Peyton, he softened his voice. “Peyton, step outside. I’ll handle this.”
Peyton nodded tearfully, clutching her cheek, and hurried out of the office.
The door clicked shut, leaving only the estranged couple.
Zavier’s face was cold as ice as he regarded her like a stranger. “What are you doing here?”
Melissa felt a chill run down her spine but quickly remembered her purpose. She forced a smile and raised the insulated lunchbox she’d been carrying, trying to sound coy. “Darling, I made you something to eat with my own hands. Please try some…”
She attempted a playful, youthful charm, hoping to rekindle the warmth of their early years.
But Zavier cut her off wearily. “Melissa, at your age, some things just don’t suit you anymore.
“You’d be better off spending your time contacting your lawyer and finalizing the divorce. Stop wasting both our time.”
His words hit her like a slap.
She had made a tremendous concession, and in his eyes, it was nothing but a waste of time.
Melissa hurled the lunchbox to the floor with a crash.
“Tell me the truth! Is there someone else?
“You must have found another woman; that’s why you’re so desperate to get rid of me, isn’t it?
“We’ve been married for nearly thirty years! I gave you children, I ran this household! Now that I’ve aged, you’re throwing the away.

She threw all dignity to the wind, unleashing a full–blown tantrum in the chairman’s office. Gone was any trace of the composed lady–she was nothing but a comered, hysterical woman.
The secretary outside turned pale with fright, hesitating to intervene, intimidated by Melissa’s ferocity. Frantic, she called Raymond for help.
Even the best soundproofing couldn’t contain such an explosive scene. Word of the chairman’s wife storming the office spread through the entire building like wildfire.
Riley, who was in the middle of a marketing meeting downstairs, and Raymond, who was reviewing documents in his own office, learned of the incident at almost the same time.
By the time Riley made her way up from the marketing floor, the worst of the chaos had passed. Melissa, exhausted from her outburst, had fled in tears.
Raymond’s face was grim as he directed the secretary and cleaning staff to clear the mess in the office.
Inside, Zavier sat alone on the sofa, utterly drained. The room was in shambles.
His temples throbbed painfully, and under the light, the grey at his temples seemed more pronounced than ever.
