Zavier knew that with Melissa’s temperament, this war of attrition would drag on for a while. He didn’t mind the fight; he’d weathered far worse storms over the years. But Riley and Sebastian were newlyweds, just beginning their life together. They didn’t deserve to be dragged into this exhausting mess.

With the holiday just two days away, an idea came to him.

Casually, he said, “The Harper Group’s new island resort project down at South Bay just wrapped up. Why don’t you and Sebastian take a trip there for the break? You can check out the results for me.”

Riley immediately caught his drift. Her brow furrowed with concern. “Dad, you’re trying to get me out of the way. But if I leave, won’t she just make things harder for you?”

A tired but warm smile crossed Zavier’s face. “Don’t worry about me, sweetheart. I made this decision knowing exactly what I was getting into. Besides, your brother is here to help. And,” his gaze turned thoughtful, “she wouldn’t dare go too far with me. You two go enjoy yourselves. Don’t let our mess weigh you down.”

He had a point. After a moment’s thought, Riley nodded. “Alright. But take care of yourself, Dad. Don’t overdo it.”

That evening, she told Sebastian about the plan.

He was walking out of the bathroom, towel drying his hair when she mentioned it, and a smile curved across his lips. He’d been thinking the same thing, actually taking her away from all the chaos in Nexopolis for a proper break. Zavier’s suggestion aligned perfectly with his own intentions.

“Your dad’s thinking ahead,” he said, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her, resting his chin on her head. “Let’s take his advice and enjoy a few days to ourselves.”

But as always, reality had other plans.

In the two days leading up to their departure, Melissa didn’t rest for a second. Barred from the Harper Group building, she switched tactics. Some mornings she’d camp outside the Harper Mansion, trying to catch Zavier before he left. Other evenings she’d wait stubbornly on the street corner across from the company, eyes fixed on every face that emerged from the lobby.

Even if she couldn’t get inside, her presence was impossible to ignore. Driving past more than once, Riley spotted her mother’s obsessive figure standing among the crowd, staring fixedly at the building’s exit. It finally made sense why her father insisted she leave town for a few days.

Finally, the day of departure arrived. Riley and Sebastian traveled light, heading to the private airstrip to board the jet and escape for some quiet time.
