Chapter 535 The Question
Chapter 535 The Question
“Colin!” The name burst from her lips before she could stop it. “Are you hurt too?”
+5 Free Co
Without waiting for his reply, she grabbed his arm and started rolling up his sleeve, desperate to check for wounds. But after a careful inspection, she found his arm smooth and unmarked-no injury at all. The alarming smear of blood was clearly from someone else, splattered on him during the chaos.
Realizing her overreaction, Audrey felt a wave of embarrassment. She quickly released his arm and stammered, “S-sorry, I thought…”
Before she could finish, Colin caught her hand.
She froze, looking up instinctively, and met a gaze so intense it stole her breath. Gone was his usual playful nonchalance, and go was the fierceness from the fight. What remained was something raw and overpowering, like a whirlpool threatening to pull her
under.
He held her gaze and asked, his voice rough, “Were you worried about me?”
Audrey felt herself flush under the heat of his stare. She bit her lip, flustered.
“Of… of course,” she muttered, looking away to avoid his eyes. “You got into that fight because of me tonight. If something happened to you, i couldn’t just ignore it. What kind of person would that make me?”
She tried to frame it as an obligation, as payback for the trouble she’d caused-anything to mask the flutter in her chest. In her mind, caring about his safety was a duty, not something born of deeper feeling.
But that wasn’t the answer Colin wanted.
The pressure on her wrist eased. His eyes dimmed again.
Just then, the red light above the emergency room door went out. The doors swung open, and several nurses wheeled Killian out
He was unconscious, his round face now wrapped in thick bandages that made him look both comical and pitiful.
The doctor nodded to Audrey and Colin. “He’s stable. We’ve run all the testno bleeding in the brain, no signs of consussion. Th wound on his forehead has been stitched up. His current unconsciousness is likely a protective response to the plow, compounde by alcohol. Once he wakes, keep him under observation for a few hours. If there’s no vomiting or severe headache, you can take
him home.”
Audrey exhaled in relief and thanked the doctor profusely. Then she and Colin followed the gurney to a private ward.
The night was deep, and the small building was wrapped in absolute stillness. Killian lay on the white hospital bed, his breathing heavy and congested. Aside from that, the room was silent.
Audrey pulled up a chair and sat beside the bed, while Colin walked to the window without a word. Neither spoke. These between them felt thick and charged–not the gentle quiet of the beach, but something strained, uneasy.
Audrey had never been alone with Celin like this. In all their history, they’d either been trading jabs in a group or exchanging glances across long dinner tables. Moments like this, close enough to hear each other breathe, were almost nonexistent
She stared at Killian’s sleeping face, but her focus kept drifting Cotin stood less than two neters away, perfectly still, yet his presence filled the room, almost stealing the air from her lungs
