She had never heard Colin speak to her in such a tone before. Gone was his usual playful sarcasm, gone was the deliberate nonchalance he wore like armor, What remained was something raw and almost desperate.

The shift caught her off guard, made her heart lurch in her chest. She instinctively looked away, fidgeting with her hands in and managed to reply, “As my friend… don’t you want me to become a better version of myself?”

“That’s not what I meant.” The word “friend” made Colin’s brow furrow deeply, his expression twisting with visible frustrati ran a hand through his hair in agitation, his voice coming out stiff and uneven. “Of course I want you to have your own amb to find your own path. But…”

“But what?” Audrey looked up, confused.

She watched him struggle with his words, and the strange tension he’d stirred in her grew stronger. She was never one for b around the bush, and his hesitation grated on her nerves. So she prodded him, her voice carrying a hint of challenge, “Colin, spit it out. This stammering act isn’t like you at all.”

“What I mean is…” He closed the distance between them in two swift strides and loomed over her, his jaw tight. “I don’t want be your friend anymore. Do you get that?”

Audrey’s pupils dilated. She sat frozen in her chair, staring up at him, her mind going blank. “What are you talking about… I do understand…”

“Don’t understand?” Colin let out a humorless laugh. He placed his hands on the armrests of her chair, caging her in, his prese overwhelming. “Then listen carefully, Audrey. I’ve liked you since we were kids. All these years, don’t tell me you never felt a th

Audrey instinctively tried to lean back, but the chair stopped her, Trapped in the small space between his arms, her heart hammered so loudly she was sure he could hear it. She swallowed hard, trying to steady herself against the shock.

Memories rushed through her mind in a blur–small details she’d dismissed over the years now clicking into place like puzzle pieces, connected by the thread of Colin’s confession.

“So…” Audrey held his gaze, the question she’d buried for years finally surfacing. “Back in school, when you got into that fight wa my ex, risking injury, even risking your career, was that because you liked me?”

At the mention of that incident, Colin’s expression darkened, a flash of menace crossing his eyes. “Yes. That bastard broke his promise. He said he’d treat you right, cherish you. But then he turned around and fell for someone else. I had to teach him a

lesson.”

Audrey looked at him, at the barely contained fury in his eyes, and felt a sudden sting behind her own. Then, laughed.

“To be honest. I didn’t even like him that much.” She let out a soft breath. “I just thought that sc

Colin’s lips curved into a self-deprecating smile, his voice rough. “Because I was scared that if I told you and you didn’t feel th same, we wouldn’t even be friends anymore.”
