“You should at least be grateful,” Raymond said coldly, his voice laced with a biting sarcasm. “Grateful that after every rotten thi you’ve pulled over the years, Dad still didn’t hesitate to save your life when his own was on the line.”
His gaze cut through Melissa and Elsie like a knife, each word deliberately chosen for maximum impact. “It’s just a pity that not everyone in this world possesses his capacity for forgiveness–willing to tolerate your behavior without any bottom line.”
With that, Raymond didn’t bother to acknowledge the sudden drain of color from Melissa’s face. He turned slightly and gave a c sharp nod to the bodyguards stationed by the entrance.
“Show them out. And from this moment on, I want you to double the security presence around this entire perimeter. I won’t hav anyone creating a scene out here and disturbing Dad’s rest.”
The bodyguards moved instantly, acknowledging the order in unison and stepping forward with imposing authority.
Melissa had deliberately timed her visit for a window when she knew Riley wouldn’t be present, hoping to slip in unnoticed and test the waters. But she hadn’t anticipated that her typically mild–mannered son could be quite this sharp and unyielding.
Right now, Raymond carried himself with the quiet, commanding weight of the head of the Harper family. His calm but ironclad demeanor sent an involuntary tremor through Melissa’s heart.
“Mom, let’s just go. Raymond is clearly upset right now.”
Seeing that the situation had deteriorated beyond repair, Elsie knew that if they continued to make a scene, the bodyguards wou inevitably manhandle them out, leaving them with nothing but their humiliation.
She tugged gently at Melissa’s sleeve, lowering her voice to a desperate whisper. “Why don’t we come back another day when things have settled down?”
No matter how unwilling Melissa felt to retreat, under the stony, watchful glares of the security detail, she had no choice but to tur on her heel and leave in bitter frustration.
During the drive back to the estate, Melissa slumped against the leather seat, staring blankly out the windshield at the passing city lights.
For some inexplicable reason, she couldn’t shake the haunting images, from the crash–the sickening screech of tires on asphalt, the sheer panic on Zavier’s face as he had lunged toward her without a second thought for his own safety.
And Raymond’s parting words continued to echo in her mind like a grim mantra. “It’s a pity pot everyone is like him.”
A wave of irrational, suffocating panic began to wash over her, tightening her chest until she could barely breathe.
Once they arrived home, Elsie immediately shifted into the role of the doting, attentive daughter.
“Mom, please try not to overthink everything. You look completely drained,” Elsie said softly, guiding Melissa up the grand staircase. “Go take a long, hot bath and try to get some rest. You’ll feel much better after a good night’s sleep.”
Melissa’s temples were throbbing with a splitting migraine.
She sat down heavily on the edge of the bed, massaging her forehead with a weary hand, and spoke to Elsie. “Honey, could you grab my bottle of pills from the nightstand drawer? My head is absolutely killing me… I really can’t even think about sleeping without my medication.”

“Of course, Mom. Just give me à second.”
Elsie did as she was instructed, retrieving the amber prescription bottle from the drawer.
As she twisted off the child–proof cap, her eyes lingered for a fraction of a second too long on the white pharmacy label.

A flicker of something dark and unreadable passed through her gaze before she shook out two small, round tablets and handed them to Melissa.
“Mom, you know the doctor warned you not to rely on these so heavily. They’re really not good for you in the long run,” she said, feigning deep concern, her tone dripping with gentle thoughtfulness.
“I know, but I can’t help it. If I don’t take them, my mind just races in circles and I can’t close my eyes for a second.”
Melissa accepted the pills and swallowed them with a quick sip of water.
The potent sedative took effect with frightening speed. Before long, the deep furrows of tension in Melissa’s brow smoothed out, and she slipped into a heavy, dreamless sleep.
Watching her mother fall completely under, the docile, caring mask on Elsie’s face vanished entirely, replaced by a chilling indifference.
Instead of retreating to her own room, she slipped out of the bedroom without making a sound, her expression now blank and detached.
A few minutes later, Elsie had changed into dark, nondescript casual clothes and slipped quietly out of the house, driving off into the oppressive darkness of the night.
She drove all the way to the remote outskirts of the city, finally pulling up in front of a private villa tucked away in a densely wooded, secluded enclave.
She killed the engine, stepped out into the cool night air, and knocked firmly on the heavy front door.
A moment later, the door was opened by a man dressed in an elegant, charcoal gray silk robe, his face pale and his expression unreadable.

Elsie had first established contact with Aiden when she had hired private investigators in Havenbrook to dig into Riley’s past.
After being effectively cut off from the Harper family resources, Elsie had quickly lost her footing in Nexopolis high society, finding herself cast out practically overnight.
All those so–called socialite friends who had once flocked around her suddenly turned their backs the moment her status evaporated.

When she was on the verge of a complete breakdown, Aiden–still residing in Havenbrook at the time—had reached out to her with a tempting proposition.
“Do you want to take back what’s rightfully yours?”
