But just before they reached the front door, Bella’s cool digirly mocking voice came from behind them. Oh, Meliwa-one more thing, Even though you’re divorced now, the family will still provide your monthly stipend. But given how businew has been lately, everyone’s tightening their belts. Starting next month, your allowance will be 100 thousand dollars.

A hundred thousand? Melissa spun around, completely stunned.

To an average family, 100 thousand dollars a month was more than enough to live comfortably.

But for Melissa, who was used to dropping six figures on a handbag without a second thought, it felt like a slap in the face.

That amount would barely cover a couple of nice dinners out-let alone maintain the lifestyle she was accustomed to.

Bella watched her world crumble with a cold smile, then turned and headed upstairs, leaving Melissa standing in the grand living room feeling like she’d been knocked out of the clouds and into the dirt.

Melissa didn’t even remember how she made it out of Blackwood Villa.

Outside, the sun was still shining brightly. She clutched the signed divorce papers in her hand as if they were the shattered pieces of her former life.

When they got back to the penthouse, Elsie stood nervously in the foyer, eyes watery and voice thick with guilt. “I’m so sorry, Mom… This is all my fault. I just wanted to stand up for you, but I ended up making Uncle and the others threaten you. I feel like… I ruined everything.”

Seeing her daughter so torn up, Melissa’s panic over the money suddenly faded.

She took Elsie’s hand gently, pulled her into a hug, and said softly, “Don’t be silly, honey. How could I blame you? You were just trying to protect me-to do the right thing. If it were Raymond or Riley, they’d probably just stand by and watch me get thrown out. Would either of them ever go to the Blackwoods to fight for me?”

Melissa stroked Elsie’s hair and sighed. “You’re the only one in this family who’s truly on my side. It means more to me than you know.”

Elsie lifted her head, her expression hesitant and uneasy. “But… because of me, you signed the papers. You’re not Mrs. Harper anymore. What are we going to do now?”

“Mrs. Harper?” Melissa let out a bitter laugh and forced a brave smile to mask the hollow feeling inside. “Honestly, I’m tired of that title anyway. Elsie, you have no idea-back when the family pushed me into that marriage, if your father had been brave enough to run away with me, we would’ve eloped years ago.

“Truth is, I never really cared about being some wealthy man’s wife. Too many rules, too many expectations-no freedom at all. Maybe this is for the best. Without that chain around my neck, we can rely on each other and live a simpler life.”

Not wanting Elsie to stress about finances, Melissa added, “But don’t worry. Over the years I’ve put aside some assets of my own, along with jewelry and savings. Even if the Blackwoods cut me off, if we’re careful, we’ll have more than enough.”

Elsie listened, nodding as if taking it all in.

Her eyes swept across the multimillion-dollar penthouse, a faint gleam of calculation passing through them.

Casually, she suggested, “Mom, this place is beautiful, but it’s way too big for just the two of us. Most of the rooms just sit empty, and they’re a hassle to maintain. It feels… wasteful.

“Why don’t we sell this place and buy something cozier and smaller? That way we’d free up a lot of cash, and we could live more comfortably, too.”

Still wrapped up in her emotions, Melissa heard Elsie’s words as nothing but practical, forward-thinking advice. She didn’t hesitate.
