Zavier rested against the headboard, his complexion still carrying a hint of pallor, though the authoritative gleam had returned to his eyes. He studied the messy, hurried signature Melissa had left on the papers, and the heavy cloud that had pressed on his heart for days seemed to dissolve almost magically.
“She finally signed,” Zavier murmured, letting out a long, quiet breath.
It struck him then that he’d been overcomplicating things before-too soft, too hesitant. With someone like Melissa, sentimental appeals were pointless. What worked was leverage, plain and simple.
Once he applied real pressure on the Blackwood family, they’d find a way to make her fall in line.
For a moment, Zavier allowed himself to feel relief.
Still, two decades of marriage weren’t nothing. He didn’t want to leave things entirely bitter.
Closing the agreement, he turned to Jacob. “It’s not in the documents, but arrange for five million from my personal account to go to Melissa privately. Don’t hand it over in one lump sum-set up a trust. She can only withdraw a fixed amount each month.
“Consider it my final gesture to her.”
Word of Zavier’s divorce reached Raymond and Riley shortly after the papers were signed.
Surprisingly, neither sibling reacted much-it was almost indifference, as if a drawn-out, exhausting story had finally reached its end. Any trust or emotional reliance they might have had toward their mother had been worn away over the years by Melissa’s increasingly erratic behavior.
Under close medical supervision, Zavier’s health improved steadily. Though his doctors still urged rest, he was eager to begin handing more core responsibilities over to Riley.
Riley moved through the corporate world at a remarkable pace, yet she never overstepped.
When it came to major company decisions, she made it a point to walk down to Raymond’s office so they could discuss matters behind closed doors. Only when they ran into issues even they couldn’t easily resolve would they bring their proposals to Zavier at the hospital.
Watching his children work together with such unshakable poise and seamless coordination, Zavier was filled with profound satisfaction. For the first time, the day he could fully step away

from all responsibilities felt genuinely within reach.
Riley’s birthday was a week away.
But on a quiet afternoon, an unexpected call came through.

The name “Aiden” flashed on her phone screen. Riley stared at it for a few seconds before answering, her voice cool and detached. “What can I do for you, Mr. Quinn?”
“I heard Ms. Harper finally got what she was after. Congratulations,” Aiden replied, a thread of amusement in his tone.
He paused, then added lightly, “Now that you have real influence at Harper Group, how about dinner?”
Riley’s tone remained icy. She kept flipping through the documents on her desk, not looking “I don’t see a need for us to meet privately, Mr. Quinn. Nor do I see a reason to share a meal.”
“No need to be so cold, Ms. Harper,” Aiden chuckled casually. “The Cedar Creek project—yes, you helped me secure it. But let’s not forget, you also used that opportunity to get closer to Sebastian and finally gathered the nerve to cut Lucas loose. It was mutually beneficial. If anything, shouldn’t you be the one thanking me over dinner?”
Riley let out a short, disdainful laugh. “Know when to stop, Mr. Quinn. Don’t overplay your hand. You used Cedar Creek as a trophy to quiet the old guard in the Quinn family and lock down your position. If we’re tallying who owes whom, I suggest you check your math.”
Aiden went quiet for a beat, then laughed again. “See, this is exactly why I say-strictly in business terms-we understand each other. So, any interest in a deeper partnership?”
“You’ve reached the wrong person, Mr. Quinn,” Riley said flatly. “All partnership inquiries should go through Harper Group’s official channels. My assistant will evaluate their merit. That’s all. I’m busy, so I won’t take any more of your time.”
Without waiting for a reply, she ended the call.
The steady rhythm of her work faltered for just a moment after she hung up.
Leaning back in her chair, Riley let her thoughts settle.
Aiden was like a snake in the grass-always surfacing when least expected, testing, probing. seeing how far he could push.
This was a critical time for Harper Group: internal transitions of power, external uncertainties
