She had the sense not to press any further. Before leaving, she gave him a knowing look and said, “Go handle your business, Raymond. Just give me a heads–up when you’re ready for that dinner.”

Back in her office, she sat down and immediately picked up her phone, texting Sebastian on WhatsApp to share the big news.

Sebastian was in the middle of a meeting when his phone up. He glanced at the screen, then quickly typed back, “Once your brother’s married off, your dad will really be able to relax.”

Word of the upcoming union between the Harper and Belmont families spread like wildfire through their social circles.

In less than a day, pretty much everyone who moved in those circles–and even some who didn’t–had caught wind of it.

Over at Blackwood Villa, Evelyn was having a full–blown meltdown.

“Raymond’s already engaged to some girl from another family! And here I am, sitting around waiting like an idiot for Aunt Melissa to come through! What are people going to think of me now? They’re probably all laughing at me for aiming too high!”

Her words carried a clear hint that Melissa hadn’t done enough to help her cause.

The Blackwoods were furious, and it wasn’t long before Skyler’s call came through for Melissa.

“Melissa!”

The moment the call connected, Skyler’s angry roar blasted through the phone, tearing into her without a shred of mercy. “What the hell are you even doing? You couldn’t get Riley married off, and now you can’t do a damn thing about Raymond’s engagement either! What kind of mother are you supposed to be?!

“Skyler, let me explain–I didn’t even know about this ahead of time…” Melissa went pale at his harsh tone, scrambling to defend herself. “If you hadn’t called, I wouldn’t have had a clue they were planning an engagement!”

“I don’t care what you did or didn’t know!” Skyler snapped, his voice cold and cutting. “The whole reason we arranged your marriage into the Harper family was to raise our family’s standing! And now look at you–you can’t even steer your own son’s wedding plans, and you’re letting the Harpers waltz right into an alliance with the Belmonts! How exactly are you repaying the Blackwoods for everything?”

“Skyler, I…”

“Save your excuses!” he cut her off bluntly. “I don’t care how you do it–you need to wreck this engagement between the Harpers and the Belmonts! Evelyn has to marry Raymond! This isn’t just about her future–it’s about ours as a family! Do you understand me?”

With that, he hung up.

Melissa held the phone to her ear, listening to the dead dial tone, feeling her frustration boil over.

Her brother’s harsh words still echoed in her head.

Right then, what upset Melissa the most wasn’t just that Zavier had gone behind her back to arrange Raymond’s marriage into the Belmont family.

What really got under her skin was that all her careful planning had fallen apart before she could even put it into motion.

Ever since her divorce from Zavier, she didn’t have the same influence she once held as the lady of the Harper household.

That feeling of being pushed out of the inner circle ate away at her constantly.

And now, this Harper–Belmont alliance had turned that distance into a solid wall, crushing any hope she had of using her son’s marriage to secure her own position–and her family’s.

Melissa couldn’t hold herself together any longer. She sank to the floor, collapsing onto the carpet, buried her face in her hands, and broke down sobbing.

“Why… why does everyone have to treat me this way…”

Hearing the unusual crying coming from the living room, Elsie stepped out of her room.

She was shocked to see Melissa–usually so composed and dignified–sitting on the floor in tears, completely coming undone.

“Mom?” she said softly as she walked over. “What’s wrong? Who upset you like this?”

Melissa’s eyes were red and swollen, streaked with frantic bloodshot lines. “Elsie… your brother… Raymond is getting engaged!”

Elsie paused for a moment, then tried to sound reassuring. “Raymond’s engaged? That’s wonderful news. 4 heard the girl is from the Belmont family–they’re one of the well–known families in Nexopolis. Isn’t it a good match for him? They’re on the same level.”

In her view, Raymond was at the right age to settle down, and an alliance with a family like the Belmonts would only help Harper Group. It was a smart business move, plain and simple.

“Wonderful? How is any of this wonderful!” Melissa shrieked, her voice shaking with emotion. “His father set this whole thing up! If this marriage goes through, Raymond will never listen to me again he’ll side completely with his dad! What room will that leave for me, his own mother?”

Lost in her outburst, she grabbed Elsie’s arm and, without thinking, let her darkest thoughts spill out. “The Blackwoods are pressuring me, telling me I have to ruin this and make sure Evelyn marries Raymond! But why should I clear the path for them? Elsie… I’d rather it be you marrying Raymond instead!”

Elsie was speechless.
