Chapter 723 Cold Break

Sage burst through the freezing water just as the helicopter thundered to life.

Herold leaned out the door, snow slashing across his face. “Move it! Get up here now!”

“Too late.” Sage stayed planted in the icy surf. Zombies inged out of the dark behind him, splashing and snarling like wild dogs scented on prey. He called toward the cabin, his gaze glued to the struggling machine, “Cover her. She hates the cold.”

The air cut like broken glass.

The helicopter needed more time to warm its engines before it could lift.

Snow whipped sideways as zombies streamed out of the greenhouse, tripping over each other in their rush toward the only living humans in sight.

Sage inhaled sharply.

The breath crystallized before it left his lips.

His arms opened wide as he released every ounce of ability he possessed. “I’m getting you out of this.”

A fierce gust of Eisgrael’s icy wind burst forth from him and swept over the terrain.

Inside the cockpit, Herold fought the controls through near–whiteout conditions. The rotors sliced through the storm, flinging ice shards across the field. Heat crawled through the engine far too slowly.

The zombie horde closed in from all sides. Their uniforms had stiffened into boards, and their skin tinted that sickly gray–blue shade that always marked the dead. Their eyes locked on the helicopter with identical hunger.

Food–fresh and breathing.

They shrieked and charged, stomping through snow with single–minded fury.

Near the landing skids, a man dropped a metal sheet over a widening crack in the ice. He thrust both hands outward and drew a glowing circle around the chopper Any zombie crossing that ten–foot radius froze mid–sprint, stuck like insects in resin.

Lightning tore through the ring moments later. Flash after flash struck the motionless bodies, burning them. where they stood.

Thup–thup–thup… Thup–thup–thup…

The blades hammered the air as the engine inched toward lift capacity. The man defending the zone had turned paper–white. His barrier shrank around him as exhaustion closed in.

The zombies crashed tighter.

A violent vibration surged through the helicopter. The machine lurched upward, finally breaking free of the ice.

“We’re taking off! Grab the rope!” Herold hurled it downward.

Sage reached for it. The ice beneath him snapped apart like glass before a hammer strike. The entire sheet gave way, dragging him into the dark water.

Zombies erupted from below and dragged him under. His domain shattered instantly as the zombie horde swarmed his sinking body.

Dozens of undead leapt for the rising helicopter at the same moment.

Sage forced one last burst of ability and mind power. The shockwave blasted outward, knocking every clinging zombie from the helicopter’s skids and sending them tumbling into the snow.

His body dropped deeper into the frozen abyss.

The instant he hit the bottom, zombies clamped onto him. Jaw after jaw tore into him without pause.
