3RD POV: 

That stung and Elijah frowned deeply. “What’s that supposed to mean? Where did that even come from?” 

Jacob shrugged again, but there was something harsh in his tone now. “Nothing. I’m just saying. maybe don’t read too much into things. People move on. They check up on you because they have to, not because they care. 

Elijah blinked repeatedly taken aback by Jacob’s word and tone, hurt flickering in his eyes. “Jacob, what the hell is wrong with you? You were the one who stayed up half the night in that waiting room praying I wouldn’t die. And you dropped everything in PA, just to be here. What are you even saying?” 

Jacob’s jaw tightened and he clenched and unclenched it. “Yeah, because the kids would’ve been crushed. You’re their father.” 

“That’s all?” Elijah asked quietly. 

Jacob didn’t answer. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, forcing a laugh. “Look, man, I’m just saying don’t set yourself up for disappointment. You’re already too emotional about this whole thing and I get it this is new to you who always hid how hurt you were but you need to act cool. Everyone is busy, and you should accept it just like how you’ve been busy for everyone too. I’m flying back to PA tonight, I think I’ve tried my best.” 

The words hit Elijah like a punch. He turned his gaze to the window, blinking hard. For a long moment, the only sound was the hum of the jazz Jacob had put on. 

“I know what you’re doing,” Elijah finally said quietly. 

“Doing?” Jacob frowned deeply. 

“Trying to make me angry. Distract me.” He turned back to Jacob with a small, knowing smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “You think if you keep me talking, I won’t realize we’ve passed the turning to the house twice already.” 

Jacob’s hands froze on the wheel, and a sheepish grin tugged at his lips. “You always were too observant for your own good.”
