3RD POV:
A FEW DAYS LATER:
“Where are you going now?” Janet ignored her mother’s question, picked up the keys and headed out the doon
“Janet! Jane-“Just as she tried to call her the second time, and Janet turned snapping at her, “I’m going to see Mrs Martinez! Why do you keep questioning my every move?!”
Mrs. Jones blinked, taken aback for a moment, then walked toward her daughter and held her hands gently. Het voice, though tired, remained soft. “You know your father and I always support you in everything. Anything you want, we will do for you. We just need to know what you’re planning so we can help. That’s all.”
Janet’s stubborn expression cracked for a second. She let out a shaky breath. “Okay. Fine. I understand.”
Mrs. Jones smiled, brushing a stray curl from Janet’s face. “Good. Now go. And please… behave.”
Janet forced a smile, kissed her mother’s cheek, and left.
The drive to the Martinez mansion felt longer than usual. The sun was unforgiving, the air even felt hotter and Janet lowered her window and removed the roof letting the wind whip through her hair as she rehearsed her argument in her head for the fiftieth time.
They need to hear my side. They’ve been poisoned by Hannah’s lies. Elijah doesn’t hate me. He can’t. He’s just confused. Hurt. And Hannah was just antagonizing me as she always was.
The mansion gates rose ahead of her, tall, black, and imposing. The security guards glanced at each other as she rolled to a stop and frowned deeply.
“I’m here to see Mrs. Martinez,” Janet said with forced politeness.
“For what purpose?” one of the guards asked, unimpressed.
They had never questioned why she was here neither had they stared her like that. She tightened her grip on the wheel of the car and clenched and unclenched her jaw.
“It’s personal,” she snapped. “And urgent.”
The guards exchanged another slow look. One sighed, stepped aside, and made a call. After a moment, the gates opened with a heavy groan. “You may park in the guest area. Someone will meet you.
“Stupid bums. Have they forgotten who I am?” Janet drove in kissing her teeth loudly.
“Relax, Janet.” She said to herself as she applied her gloss and rehearsed her calm expression in the rearview 1 mirror.
Her reflection stared back, eyes slightly wild, anxiety tucked beneath carefully applied mascara. She inhaled deeply.
“This is going to fix things,” she whispered to herself. “They need to understand.”
The front door opened before she even reached it.
Mrs. Martinez stood there.
Tall, dignified, dressed in a silk blouse and tailored slacks, she looked like a woman who rarely raised her voice
but had no problem shutting someone down when necessary. Her expression was unreadable and Janet didn’t like it one bit.
“Janet.” She said the name like it was thin ice under her shoes. “Come in.”
Janet smiled, relieved. “Thank you so much for seeing me. I really appreciate-”
Mrs. Martinez raised one hand. “Let’s skip the formalities. Follow me.”
Janet swallowed and nodded quickly.
They walked through a long, bright hallway decorated with portraits, vases, and fresh lilies. The house smelled like lemon polish and something warm from the kitchen. It felt like home… the home Janet once imagined herself living in when she married Elijah. When she thought she would become Janet Martinez.
Everyday her heart clenched in anger of what her life would have been if not because of Hannah and the twins.
Mrs. Martinez led her into a sitting room with pastel walls, plush furniture, and a coffee table stacked neatly with magazines.
“Have a seat,” she said.
Janet sat greeting Mr Martinez who had his eyes glued to his iPad checking the stocks but he paid her no mind. She smoothed her skirt and straightening her posture. Her heart hammered loudly she could hear it.
Mrs. Martinez took a seat across from her, fingers interlaced, eyes sharp. “State your purpose.’
