Breathing Again 

HANNAH’S POV: 

THAT SAME NIGHT: 

I wasn’t sure how long I was in the elevator as I had shut my eyes tight but I opened my eyes when I felt the elevator move and the light came on. 

Tears rolled down my cheeks when the door opened and Elijah was standing there with three security behind him officers. He was breathing hard as though he’d run from the opposite side of the building. The moment our eyes met, he stepped forward and pulled me into him warmly. 

His arms wrapped around me, his hand cupping the back of my head while I buried my face in his chest. And just like that, everything inside me broke open. 

“You’re okay…” he repeated softly, kissing the top of my head. “You’re okay, baby. I’ve got you.” 

Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I clung to him like letting go would drop me back into the darkness. I had never been more terrified 

One of the security officers cleared his throat. “We are so sorry, ma’am,” he said. “We’re checking the system now. We don’t know what went wrong…everything has been functioning perfectly.” 

Elijah’s arm tightened around me protectively. “You should look into it in detail without missing anything. Right now, she needs air.” 

He didn’t say another word. He just guided me out of the elevator, one arm securely around my shoulders as he walked me toward the exit. I leaned into him weakly not because I couldn’t walk, but because the tremor in my body refused to stop. He took my bag and held in his hands. 

Outside, the cool night breeze kissed my skin, grounding me a little. But the shaking didn’t leave. Not fully. He opened the car door, helped me inside, then rounded the passenger’s side and got in. For several seconds, we sat in silence. My breath came out uneven. I wiped my cheeks, embarrassed. 

“I know it’s not that serious…I’m just…” I chuckled awkwardly and he quickly grabbed my hand. 

“Don’t,” he said gently, brushing a stray tear from my chin. “Don’t apologize for anything.”
