Trapped Between Floors
HANNAH’S POV:
I took a few minutes to send some follow-up emails, sign digital approvals, and rewrite a budget line that didn’t sit right with me. By the time I looked up, the sun outside had begun its lazy descent.
The office floors were mostly quiet. Except for the hum of air conditioning and faint muffled sounds of printers in some corner.
I had heard each and everyone come in to tell me they were leaving but I was too focused to pay any attention
I shut down my computer, collected my bag, my phone, and the last bouquet of flowers Elijah had sent earlier which still smelled like lilies and warm effort, and stepped out.
The hallway was mostly empty, but the lights were still on. I walked slowly, heels clicking on the polished floor.
As I neared the elevator, the lights flickered slightly. Only once which made me pause.
Then shrugged. It was a very tall building in a city that occasionally had electrical flicks, it wasn’t anything new. I guess.
I pressed the elevator button, waiting and just then,a faint feminine, soft, familiar scent drifted past me.
My heart paused mid-beat as I was certain I knew that perfume but couldn’t remember where exactly I knew it from.
I shook my head quickly and I jumped a bit when the elevator dinged but I stepped inside and pressed “G”.
The doors slid shut and I exhaled slowly, leaning back against the cold wall.
A second later, the elevator buzzed strangely and it wasn’t loud but it was just enough to draw a frown from me.
Then the lights went off and I was met with total darkness and my heart jumped to my throat.
“What-?”
A second later, the lights flickered on for half a second, then off again.
“Okay, no. No no no…”
The elevator shook, just slightly, then stopped moving completely. The air felt tighter instantly and I swallowed hard. I wasn’t scared of elevators. I had never been. But being trapped in a metal box where the lights couldn’t make up their mind and the air suddenly felt thinner? Being helpless in a confined space was something I had lived through before.
And my body remembered.
My breathing turned quick. Shallow. Uneven.
I took a slow breath, pressing my back to the wall.
“It’s fine. It’s just a glitch. You’re going to be fine.”
I reached into my bag with trembling fingers and fumbled for my phone.
