What Envy Becomes
HANNAH’S POV:
The liquid splashed onto the floor, crawling across the concrete like living fire. It circled the legs of the chair I was bound to. The smell thickened, choking the air.
“No, no, no, no,.. please,” I cried out loudly, thrashing weakly against the ropes cutting into my wrists. “Stop! Janet, please stop! You don’t want to do this!”
She laughed. A short, breathy, almost delighted laugh and her parents joined in the laughter.
“You see?” she said calmly, still pouring. “You always sound so dramatic.”
“Janet, I’m begging you,” I cried and suddenly I felt the cold fuel on my lap. “Please! Whatever I did, we can talk about it. We can fix it-”
“You?” She interrupted sharply, finally looking directly at me. Her eyes were bright with rage. “Fix it?”
The pouring stopped. For a second, the room was deathly quiet except for my ragged breathing.
Then she snapped.
“You stole my life!” she screamed. “You stole everything that was supposed to be mine!”
“I didn’t steal anything! You have everything anyone could ask for. Parents who love you!” I yelled back through my tears. “I never took anything from you on purpose!”
“That’s a lie!” she shrieked. “You took my man! You took him from me! As soon as you returned, there was suddenly problems, why couldn’t you just stay where you are coming from? Why?!”
My heart beat raced seeing the crazy look in her eyes that screamed destruction and hate, “Elijah?” I whispered in disbelief. “Janet, I didn’t even want him at first!”
She froze. Her parents shifted slightly, watching more attentively now.
“You’re lying, It’s Elijah. I’ve always wanted him since I saw him at that party.” she said slowly.
