What A Husband Does
ELIJAH’S POV:
The image of her face flashed behind my eyelids. Her soft smile that always made everything better. The way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she laughed at one of my terrible jokes. The way she looked at me sometimes, like I was the safest thing in her entire world.
And I had failed her. Failed her in the most unforgivable way possible.
A husband’s job was to protect his wife. To keep her safe. And I had let someone take her from me,
My phone suddenly vibrated violently in my shaking hand, the sharp sensation snapping me out of my downward spiral. I flinched as if I’d been burned and dragged the phone up with trembling fingers.
The screen lit up, and my heart jumped when I saw my godfather’s name.
I stared at it for half a second too long, fear rooting me in place. What if this was bad news? What if they’d found her body?
Then instinct took over. I answered before the second ring could even finish.
“Yes, sir,” I said, and my voice came out hoarse and thin, barely recognizable even to myself.
“Elijah,” his voice was firm but urgent, layered with the type of tension that told me something was happening before he even explained. “We’ve got two possible locations. We just received an anonymous tip that Janet was sighted outside a facility on the east end, in the abandoned warehouse district. The second possible location is near the wooded area where we found that cottage earlier during the initial search. We don’t yet have visual confirmation on either location.”
My heart began to pound so violently it felt like it was slamming directly against my throat. A dizzy wave rushed through me and I had to brace my free hand against the wall to stay upright.
“Which one are you going to first?” I demanded, trying to sound composed but failing completely. My voice broke on the last word.
“We’re mobilizing teams to both locations simultaneously,” he replied, his tone measured and professional. “But Elijah, I need you to stay where you are. Let us handle this. This is extremely dangerous and…”
“I’m coming,” I cut in instantly, the words leaving my mouth before logic or reason could stop them. “Tell me where you’re sending Team B. I’ll meet them there.”
“Elijah, listen to me…”
“No, let’s not do this again,” I said, my voice rough with desperation. “There’s nothing you could say that would make me sit here and twiddle my thumbs while you search for her. She’s my fiancée and my wife. The mother of my children. I won’t sit and wait again. Not this time.”
