The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 145

A Father’s Prayer

ELIJAH’S POV:

He looked at me for a long moment with those serious eyes that were so much like Hannah’s. Then he nodded slowly.

I pulled him into a tight hug and kissed the top of his head. “I’m going to bring your mom home. I promise you.”

“You better,” he whispered against my chest.

Within minutes, I was in my car. The engine roared to life as I peeled out of the driveway with probably reckless speed, but I didn’t care.

Sirens wailed somewhere in the distance. Police were already moving, heading to both locations. But they sounded far away, almost unreal, like background noise in a movie.

My hands were slick with nervous sweat on the steering wheel. I wiped one palm against my jeans and gripped tighter, my knuckles going white.

Every traffic light felt like a personal betrayal. Every red signal felt like another precious second being stolen from Hannah’s life. Every slow vehicle in front of me felt like an enemy I wanted to destroy.

My chest burned with the effort of breathing. My mind kept betraying me with images I couldn’t shut out.

Hannah bound to a chair, her mouth bleeding from screaming. Her eyes wide with terror, desperately calling my name. Hannah alone in a dark room, searching for me with blind, desperate hands. Hannah giving up hope, believing I wasn’t coming for her.

“No,” I whispered to myself violently, shaking my head. “No. She’s strong. She’s alive. She’s waiting for me. She knows I’m coming.”

Please be alive. Please, God, let her be alive.

The first location came into view after about fifteen minutes of driving like a madman. An abandoned metal warehouse slumped in the distance like a dead beast. Its walls were corroded with rust. Its gates were chained and bent from years of neglect. The whole place looked like it had been forgotten by the world.

Police lights painted the entire area in violent streaks of blue and red, flashing so brightly they hurt my eyes.

I pulled in so abruptly my tires screeched in protest, leaving black marks on the pavement,

Officers stormed the building with weapons drawn, their flashlights cutting through dust and shadow. They were shouting commands into the darkness, their voices echoing off the metal walls.

I stood at a distance, frozen in place, my heart lodged painfully in my throat. I couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t move. Could only watch and pray.
