No Remorse
3RD POV:
“She should have died in there,” she hissed venomously, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. “She deserved to burn alive.”
Every officer’s grip on her tightened instantly, their faces hardening.
Jacob’s eyes widened in shock and disgust. He clenched and unclenched his jaw, trying to control himself. “You’re actually sick. You need psychiatric help.”
Martin stared at her with pure, undisguised disgust. “You’re so done. Completely done. You’ll never see the outside of a prison cell again.”
Lucas looked at her one more time and said with absolute certainty, “But she didn’t die. She’s alive. She survived because she’s stronger than you’ll ever be. And I genuinely hope you die alone in a cell.”
Janet’s mother, hearing her daughter’s words, collapsed into even harder sobs. Fear ran visibly through her entire body. “Janet, why? Why would you say that? We’re going to be all over the news! We’re going to be tagged as kidnappers and attempted murderers! Our lives are over!”
Her father just shook his head over and over, like the motion could somehow erase what they’d done. “This wasn’t supposed to… we didn’t mean for it to go this far… we never meant for…”
But no one was listening to their excuses. Because at the end of the day, they’d believed that no one cared enough about Hannah to look for her. They’d thought she would die in that fire and Janet could step in as Elijah’s comforter. As a perfect stepmother to the twins.
They’d been so confident, so sure of their plan. Both parents had been planning to go on an expensive vacation after all of this was over, funded by the dividend payments they were still receiving from Hannah’s marriage to Elijah all those years ago.
Money they’d gotten from selling their daughter like property.
