Between Breath and Hope
3RD POV:
TWO DAYS LATER:
It had been forty-eight hours since Hannah had been pulled from that burning building, and both she and Elijah were still in the hospital.
Janet had been apprehended and was currently sitting in a jail cell awaiting formal charges. Her parents were also detained, facing their own list of serious criminal charges including kidnapping, attempted murder, and arson
But none of that mattered. None of the justice, none of the arrests, none of the news coverage that was blowing up across every channel. None of it mattered compared to the fragile, terrifying quiet that surrounded Hannah’s room in the ICU.
Elijah had been moved out of emergency observation that morning after his vitals had finally stabilized enough for the doctors to feel comfortable. He was breathing on his own now, though his lungs remained inflamed and tender. His body was weak from sheer exhaustion and the damage from smoke inhalation.
For the past two days, he’d drifted in and out of consciousness, caught somewhere between the sedatives they’d given him and the heavy pull of physical shock. His body had been through trauma, and it was demanding rest whether he wanted to give it or not.
When they’d first been rushed into the hospital two nights ago, both of them had been immediately taken to intensive care. The emergency room had been chaos. Doctors and nurses swarming. Machines beeping frantically. Urgent voices calling out medical terms.
Elijah had been semiconscious through most of it, fighting the oxygen mask, fighting the hands trying to treat him. He kept trying to turn his head, desperately trying to see where they’d taken Hannah.
“Hannah!” he’d kept saying, his voice hoarse and damaged. “Please, you need to make sure my wife is okay. Is she breathing? Is she going to be okay?”
The medical team had been working on him, trying to assess his injuries, trying to get IV lines in, but he kept resisting. He kept trying to see past them to where Hannah was.
“We have the best professionals taking care of her right now,” one of the nurses had said gently, trying to calm him. “But you need to let us take care of you, sir. You’re in bad shape too.”
