Between Breath and Hope (2)
3RD POV:
His father felt his chest tighten with emotion. Even after everything, after nearly dying himself, his son’s first thought was still of his wife. It was admirable and heartbreaking all at once.
His mother swallowed hard, forcing her voice to stay steady and not break under the weight of her own fear and worry. “She’s okay, sweetheart. She’s safe. She’s here in the hospital too. She’s being taken care of.”
Elijah inhaled sharply, trying to take a deep breath. But it was too sharp, too fast. Pain’stabbed through his chest like a knife, and he started coughing violently. The sound was harsh and wet, tearing through the quiet of the room.
“Elijah, stop. Don’t strain yourself,” his father said quickly, stepping forward and placing a firm hand on his shoulder. “You need to breathe slowly and carefully. Your lungs are still healing.”
But Elijah pushed the oxygen mask aside weakly with trembling fingers. The medical team had left it on him mainly for monitoring purposes, making sure his oxygen levels stayed stable, but he didn’t actually need it constantly anymore.
“Hannah,” he said again, his voice desperate and breaking. “Where is she exactly? What room? Is she…” His breath faltered, catching in his damaged throat. “Is she alive? Please, you have to tell me she’s alive.”
His mother nodded immediately, cupping his face with both hands, making sure he was looking directly at her. ” Yes, Elijah. Yes, she’s alive. She’s in intensive care, sweetheart, but she’s alive. She’s being taken care of by the best doctors in this hospital.”
Elijah’s eyes squeezed shut tightly, and a small, broken sound escaped him. It was a mixture of profound gratitude and intense pain. Relief that she was alive mixed with agony over what she must have gone through.
A single tear slid down his cheek.
He swallowed hard, the motion painful, forcing air into his reluctant lungs. “I need to see her,” he said, his voice barely more than a whisper. “Please. I need to see her with my own eyes.
“You can’t yet,” his father said softly but firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. “You’re not strong enough to leave this bed, son. The doctor hasn’t even come to check your reflexes and responses since you woke up. You could collapse again.”
