The Carriage Ride Home
HANNAH’S POV:
“To Hannah and Elijah,” he’d started, raising his champagne glass high. “May you have many more children to drive you insane. May you have incredible sex for the rest of your lives. And Elijah, my dear friend and brother-in- law, if you ever even think about hurting this woman, you’ll have to deal with me. And trust me, you don’t want that.”
“I would never hurt her,” Elijah had replied loudly, kissing the top of my head. “And that threat goes for you too by the way. You’re marrying my brother soon. You hurt him, you deal with me.”
Everyone laughed at their exchange. Lucas had squinted his eyes at Elijah in mock threat, and Elijah had stared right back, both of them trying not to smile.
I’d noticed Jacob offering Cherry a glass of wine at one point, and I’d smiled knowingly when she’d politely declined.
Because I knew her secret. Cherry was pregnant, about three months along now.
She’d told me privately a few weeks ago, crying happy tears as she’d explained her decision. “I want what you have, Hannah. You’re a successful fashion designer with a beautiful family and career. I want both too. A career I love and a family I adore. I need to learn how to balance everything. But I’m so happy. So excited.”
We’d cried together and celebrated together, and I couldn’t wait to see her become a mother.
As the night deepened and the music softened into something slower and sweeter, after Elijah and I had shared our first dance and then danced with various family members and friends, Elijah leaned close to my ear.
“Come with me,” he whispered mysteriously. “I have one more surprise for you.”
I followed him outside the reception hall, still laughing from something ridiculous Lucas had just said, only to freeze completely at the sight waiting for us beyond the church gates.
A carriage.
An actual white carriage, like something straight out of a fairy tale. It was polished and gleaming, glowing beneath soft romantic lights. Two magnificent white horses stood proudly at the front, and the entire carriage was decorated with pale pink flowers that perfectly matched our wedding theme.
I just stared at it with my mouth hanging open, then slowly turned to look at Elijah in complete disbelief.
“You did not,” I said, blinking repeatedly. “Tell me you did not hire a Cinderella carriage for our wedding.”
From behind us, I heard Amelia’s excited shriek. “A PONY! Daddy got us ponies!”
“I absolutely did,” Elijah said smugly, looking extremely pleased with himself as he picked up Amelia and she giggled with pure joy.
I laughed in complete disbelief, covering my mouth with both hands. “Elijah William Martinez, are we living in a fairytale right now?”
Before he could answer, Andrew came running toward us, his little suit jacket flapping. His eyes were absolutely sparkling with excitement.
“Are we really going to ride in that beautiful carriage?” Amelia gasped, staring at it up close with wonder.
“Yes, we are,” Elijah confirmed, lifting her effortlessly. “But only if you both promise not to completely steal the spotlight from the bride. This is Mommy’s special day.”
Andrew wrapped his arms tightly around my legs, looking up at me with such pure love. “You look like a real princess, Mommy. You should definitely ride in style,” he said seriously.
