Covered Wall
HANNAH’S POV:
It started as just a silhouette. The line of a shoulder. The way a skirt falls when the fabric has enough body to move with intention. The curve of a neckline I had been thinking about for weeks but had not put on paper yet. My hand moved across the wall and the lines came easily, more easily than I expected, like they had been waiting there inside me all this time and the blank wall was simply the surface they needed.
I did not think too hard. I just drew.
By the time the team started arriving at nine there were five designs on that wall in pencil. Rough and imperfect and completely full of life.
Kate was the first one through the door. She walked in, stopped completely still in the entrance, grabbed Moses’ arm beside her without even looking at him, and the two of them just stood there staring at the wall. Then Kate said in a voice that was barely above a whisper, “Oh wow.”
Lily came in behind them and walked straight to the wall without saying a single word, tilting her head slightly the way she always did when she was truly looking at something. Priya stood right beside her. Theo came in, took one long look at the wall, sat himself down at the nearest table, and opened his notepad. No comment and just started working. I respected that about Theo.
Even Sandra, who arrived last with her large leather bag and an expression that already suggested she had identified a minimum of potential problems with the day, stopped when she saw the wall. She stood there for a longer moment than I expected.
“That one,” she said finally, pointing to the third sketch. “That is the one that is going to make people stop breathing for a second.”
“That is the exact one I thought too,” I said.
