HANNAH’S POV:
Lucas, who was sitting beside me, made a low sound in his throat.
“The archive room,” Elijah said quietly.
“Yes.” The detective folded his hands. “The accelerants were concentrated there more heavily than anywhere else in the building. Whoever started this fire wanted that room gone first and most completely. The rest of the
damage spread outward from that point. But the archive room was the clear primary target.”
I looked down at my hands in my lap because I did not want anyone to see my face in that moment. The archive room. Of all the rooms in that entire building. That was where I kept everything. Not just current work but history/ Years and years of history. The original sketches. Fabric samples I had kept from my very first collection. The documents.
My mother’s photographs.
I had scanned most of them at some point but there were some prints I had never gotten around to scanning. The ones that were already slightly faded and I kept meaning to have them properly restored but life kept happening and I never got to it. Those were gone now. The particular way her eyes crinkled at the outer corners in one specific photo that I had looked at so many times I could draw it from memory, but memory and the actual thing are not the same. The actual thing was gone.
Whoever did this knew exactly where to aim.
They knew about the archive. They knew what was inside it. This was not a random act. This was not someone with a broad grudge against a fashion company. This was precise and it was personal and it required someone who had done real research before they walked into that building with their accelerants and their cold deliberate plan.
I kept my voice very even when I said, “Thank you for telling us.”
Detective Harmon looked at me for a moment. “Is there anything you are able to share that might help us? Anyone who knew specifically about the contents of that archive room? Anyone who might have had a particular reason to target it?”
