Working Trust
ELIJAH’S POV:
Kojo’s preliminary report had come through that morning and it was impressively thorough for something produced in under forty-eight hours. Aldric Voros was seventy-three years old. He was based between London and Milan with homes in three other countries. The fashion house that bore his name was among the fifteen most valuable luxury brands in the world. He held board positions at two international fashion councils. He had personal relationships with sitting government officials across different countries. He had the type of media connections where stories about him tended to stay quiet when things went wrong and get loud only when things were going right.
Kojo had also found something more specific under the section of the report he had titled Orica connections and local presence.
Over the past fourteen months a man had been quietly active in Orica’s fashion and investment circles. Attending events. Making introductions. Positioning himself between the worlds of fashion and finance in a way that looked like ordinary networking but was, when you looked at the pattern of it, pointed very deliberately at one specific area: independent designers who were building toward international attention.
The man’s name was Rowan Ashby.
I had heard that name from Hannah. She had mentioned him a few months back, briefly and without much weight on it. A man she had run into at a mall and then again at an event. Friendly enough. Had asked her to dinner a couple of times. She had turned him down because she had good instincts about what she did and did not have room for, and she had not thought much about him after that.
Kojo’s report showed that Rowan Ashby had been working as a senior consultant for a company called Veritas Partners for three years. Veritas Partners’ majority shareholder, when you followed the trail through three separate holding companies across two different countries, was a Luxembourg-based investment vehicle that was, at its foundation, controlled by Aldric Voros.
I read it to Lucas out loud.
He stared at me when I finished. “Rowan Ashby,” he said slowly.
“Yes.”
“The man who kept turning up in her orbit. Who kept asking her to dinner.”
