The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 230

Too Big to Fall

ELIJAH’S POV:

I told her that evening after the twins were in bed.

I had come upstairs earlier than usual to do the bedtime handoff. Andrew was reading, which was no surprise, he was always reading, but tonight the book was one about the human immune system which he had found somewhere in the house and had been working through with a dedication that suggested he had decided this week was medicine week. He explained three separate things about white blood cells to me while I was sitting on the edge of his bed and I followed about sixty percent of it and nodded at the right moments and he seemed satisfied with that.

Amelia had been in a theatrical mood all evening and by the time I got to her room she had decided she needed to tell me about a dream she had the night before in full detail, including the part where she was a princess who also ran a bakery and the bread kept turning into birds which she said was inconvenient but also kind of beautiful and she had mixed feelings about it. I told her it sounded like a very eventful dream. She said yes it was very stressful but also she felt she had handled it well. I agreed that handling bread turning into birds with mixed feelings rather than panic was probably the mature response.

I kissed them both goodnight and came back downstairs.

I was not going to let Aldric Voros anywhere near this.

That was not a complicated thought or a strategic one. It was just the simplest and truest thing I knew in that moment. Whatever it took. However long. Whatever resources and patience and careful legal groundwork was required. He was not coming anywhere near my family or my wife’s work or the name of a woman who had deserved so much better than what she got.

I went into the living room and sat down across from Hannah.

She was in the living room with her sketchbook on her knee, which was where she always ended up at the end of a day even when she had been sketching all day at the warehouse. It was like she needed to do it once more in the quiet of home to actually close the day’s thinking down.

I sat down across from her and she looked at my face and closed the sketchbook immediately.

“Tell me,” she said.
