ELIJAH’S POV: 

“No,” I said. “You turned him down every time and you never discussed the collection with him, never showed him anything, never gave him any real access to what you were building. Whatever he was sent to find, he could only see from a distance.” 

She breathed out slowly. “Watching but not from inside.” 

“Just watching. Reporting back on how much momentum the collection was building. Whether it looked like it was going to go somewhere serious.” 

“And it was,” she said. “And that was what scared him.” 

“That was the problem,” I said. 

She sat with it for another moment. Then she looked up at me. “Lucas. Does he know about the distribution deal? 

“I told him this afternoon before you.” 

Something moved across her face. Not hurt exactly. More like the specific tiredness of someone adding one more thing to a pile that is already heavy. “He has been sitting with that all day,” she said. It was not a question. 

“Yes.” 

She picked up her phone immediately. 

“Hannah,” I said. “You do not have to do this tonight. You just got all of this information yourself. You are allowed to sit with it first.” 

She looked at me with an expression that was half fond and half the specific look she gives me when she thinks I am being slightly dense about something obvious. “He is blaming himself and he is going to get quieter and quieter about it until someone says the actual words directly to him. I know how he works. I need to call him.” 

I looked at her. 

“You are a better friend than most people know how to be,” I said honestly. 

She stood up. “You would do the same.” 

“I would do it differently.” 

“Yes,” she agreed, already walking to the kitchen. “But you would do it.” 

She was on the phone with Lucas for about forty minutes. 

When she came back she sat beside me on the couch this time instead of across from me, close enough that her shoulder was against mine.
