The Return of Mirada
HANNAH’S POV:
Elijah found me in the greenroom about twenty minutes after the show ended. He came through the door and looked at me across the room and there was a proud look on his face.
“The twins?” I said into his shoulder.
“With my parents. Safe and asleep and apparently Amelia had been telling everyone in the building who would listen that her mother was having her fashion show tonight. My mother said she told the man in the lift, the security guard at the desk, and a woman who had come to deliver something for a neighbour on the third floor.
I laughed into his shoulder and then stopped laughing because something was trying to come up from underneath and if I let it out in the greenroom with all these people it was going to be a different kind of moment than I wanted this to be.
“Later,” he said quietly. He understood. He always understood.
“Later,” I agreed.
Lucas came in behind him, loud and bright and entirely himself, kissed me on both cheeks, told me it was the most beautiful thing he had been in the same room as in his entire professional life, declared that Voros was going to hate every single second of the next few months, and then announced he needed a drink and was there any champagne because this was absolutely a champagne situation.
There was champagne. Maya had arranged it. Of course she had.
Mrs. Martinez appeared at my elbow with a glass that she had clearly taken directly from the tray and handed to me without asking, which was the appropriate thing to do. She looked at me and her eyes were doing the thing they did sometimes, that particular brightness that was not tears exactly but was something adjacent to them, and she said, “Your mother-in-law is a very emotional person and she would like you to know that she is choosing to describe what she just witnessed as extraordinary and leave it there because if she says anything else she is going to embarrass herself in front of the press.”
“You are not embarrassing yourself,” I said.
“I am holding it together by a very thin thread,” she said, with great dignity. “Please do not test it.” She squeezed my hand once, firmly, and then turned to Lucas and said, “You. Get me a glass. And do not give me one of the small ones, this is not a small occasion.”
