The Name He Tried to Erase
HANNAH’S POV:
I sat with that.
“The name Mirada,” Maya said carefully, “is in four languages on the trending lists right now and it’s not the brand or the collection but the name itself. Mirada.”
The name itself.
I pressed the paper a little tighter in my hand.
“She is everywhere,” I said quietly.
“Yes,” Maya said. “She is.”
3RD POV:
On a different side of the world, in an apartment in a city with grey evening light coming through windows that overlooked a street he had walked every day for thirty years, a man sat in front of a screen.
He was seventy-three years old and he was dressed in the way he was always dressed, which was expensively and with care, because that was the costume he had put on every inorning for fifty years and the costume had become indistinguishable from the man inside it. On the screen in front of him was the broadcast of a fashion show. He had been watching it from the beginning because someone on his team had flagged it and he had told them he would handle it himself.
He watched the models. He watched the pieces. He had been in the fashion industry for long enough to know what he was seeing and what he was seeing was extraordinary and it was not because he was generous. He was not a generous man. But because the work was what it was and even he could not argue with the work.
Then the designer walked.
He watched Hannah Martinez walk to the end of a runway in a white gown and stand in front of a room that rose for her. He watched her look at a woman in the front row and say something with her mouth and the woman cry. He watched the name Mirada appear on the screen in the caption below the broadcast.
