The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 259

ELIJAH’S POV:

She looked at me. “Elijah, I did not do anything wrong in those years. I was a woman alone with two small children in a foreign city working every hour I had and trying to build something and I made normal human decisions that are nobody’s business and that photograph is from an event I was at for some minutes.”

“I know,” I said.

“We are not going to respond to this.”

“Agreed,” I said. “Responding gives it weight. Castellan’s team recommends exactly that. We let it move through the news cycle and we focus on what we are actually building.”

Lucas called while we were still at the table. I could tell from Hannah’s side of the conversation that he had seen the articles and was characteristically expressive about them. She had the phone to her ear and she said mm, and yes, and I know, and then she said “Lucas” in the specific tone that means the emotional portion of this conversation is over now and we are moving to practical, and she said, “He is trying to distract us. The question is not what are we going to do about the articles. The question is how do we make sure that what we are actually doing stays on track while he is making noise.” A pause. “Yes. Call Castellan’s office and ask if she has a media strategy contact she trusts. We are going to need someone who knows how to time a public narrative. Not yet. But soon.” Another pause. “Yes, reckoning can still be in it. I have not told you it cannot be in it.” She caught my eye across the table and held it for a moment. “Talk tomorrow,” she said, and hung up.

She set the phone down.

She picked up the pencil. She looked at the sketchbook. She put the pencil back down. “I hate this,” she said. Not loudly. Just plainly. “And this is not because I am frightened of it. I hate it because it is so deliberately cruel and so completely out from who I actually am.”

“I know,” I said.
