The First Counterattack
ELIJAH’S POV:
The smear campaign started on a Thursday.
I had expected something. When you begin to move against a man like Aldric Voros you have to expect a response because men like that do not absorb pressure without redirecting it somewhere. I had talked to Hannah about this. I had told her it was coming. I had tried to prepare her for the shape of it without being able to tell her exactly what form it would take.
But knowing something is coming and experiencing it are not the same thing.
The first piece appeared on a gossip platform. A story about Hannah’s years in Frerus, framed in ways that were technically based on facts but arranged to suggest things that were not true. Old photographs resurfaced. One in particular, taken at a party about some years ago, that showed Hannah in what looked like a compromising situation but which was, I knew from her telling me about it one certain time, a moment where she had been standing next to someone she barely knew at an event she had barely attended for twenty minutes before leaving. The photograph had been cropped and the context was not there.
By noon it had been picked up by three other outlets.
By three in the afternoon it was circulating on enough platforms that my communications team flagged it and asked how I wanted to respond. I said hold. I called Kojo and said find me who placed this story and who paid for it and get me any traceable link between the placing and any known entity in Voros’s network. He said he would have something by morning.
