The Mistress on Display
MARY’S POV:
I could see it in the tight set of her jaw and the cold look in her eyes. She saw through every bit of Vesper’s little routine, and she was not going to let her spin the story. Beatrice had been around long enough to know when someone was putting on an act, and she was far too smart to be fooled by a woman like Vesper.
As I stood there taking in the whole room, I noticed something else.
The door to the room had been left cracked open. The hospital walls were thin, and everyone inside had been raising their voices.
I could hear soft whispers coming from the hallway outside, the sound of shoes scuffling against the clean floor, and the faint rustle of clothing. People were gathering right outside the door, drawn in by the loud fighting, waiting to get a good look at the drama unfolding in Room 412. I could see dark shadows moving along the strip of light under the door, showing that a small crowd was standing out there.
They wanted to see the fight. They wanted to see rich people making fools of themselves. They wanted something exciting to watch so they could tell their friends about it later.
I took three slow steps forward.
My hand reached out and took hold of the heavy metal door handle. The surface felt cold against my skin, hard and solid under my palm. The coldness helped steady my nerves. I pulled in a deep breath of air, gripped the handle firmly, and pulled the door all the way open.
Just as I thought, a bunch of people were standing right in the hallway. There was a young nurse in blue clothes with a plastic name tag pinned to her shirt. There was a middle-aged man in a dark suit with his tie pulled down, his face flushed with excitement. There was an older woman carrying a bright vase of flowers, her eyes wide as she leaned in. They were all standing close together, craning their necks toward the open door to see what was happening inside.
The excited looks on their faces froze the second they saw me staring right at them.
They looked at my face, then peered past my shoulder into the room. They saw Alistair standing there with his hair messy and his face red. They saw Beatrice holding her heavy brown handbag up in the air like a club. They saw Vesper lying in the bed with tears running down her face and a thick white bandage wrapped around her ankle. They took in the entire strange picture in one second flat.
They saw every single detail.
The people in the hall immediately tried to act natural and back away, their shoes squeaking on the floor as they looked down at their feet. The young nurse took two quick steps backward, her face turning bright red with shame. The man in the suit cleared his throat loudly and looked at the ceiling lights. The woman holding the flowers pulled the vase closer to her chest like a shield.
I did not let them walk away.

“You do not have to leave,” I said, speaking loudly and clearly so my voice carried right down the hall.” This is a public hospital room. You are more than welcome to come inside and watch. After all, the woman in that bed just finished saying she was not afraid of anyone judging her and was completely ready to hear comments about her behavior.”
My words hit the air like heavy rocks. I watched Alistair’s head snap around toward me, all the color draining right out of his skin. His eyes went huge, his mouth opened up in shock, and his whole body
went stiff.
“Have you lost your mind?” he barked at me, his voice dropping into a harsh, frantic whisper. “Shut the door right now!”
I stood right where I was and did not move an inch.
