The Pregnancy Reveal

MARY’S POV:

The single word hung suspended in the chilled air of the hospital room like an explosive device waiting for the fuse to burn down.

“Congratulations!”

The young nurse’s smile was wide, open, and completely genuine. She was utterly oblivious to the absolute disaster of a situation she had just walked into. She held out a white plastic clipboard, the sheets of paper clipped to it rustling softly in the quiet room. Her eyes were bright with the kind of innocent excitement that usually came with delivering good news to waiting families. Her light blue uniform was neatly pressed, and her plastic hospital badge glittered under the overhead fluorescent lights. She looked as though she had just come straight from a different floor, a happy place where the news of a new life was met with joyful tears, warm hugs, and celebratory phone calls.

She had no idea that she had just stepped directly into a total war zone.

Beatrice stood completely still, staring at the nurse in absolute shock.

The color drained from her face, turning her skin a pale, ghostly white, before a sudden surge of heat flushed her neck red. The heavy brown leather handbag she had been holding so tightly slipped right out of her fingers. It hit the polished floor tiles with a dull, heavy thud that seemed to echo through the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. She whipped her head around to face her son, her eyes wide with horror and her mouth hanging open. I could practically see the gears turning wildly inside her head as all the lies, the excuses, and the strange behavior of the past few months finally clicked into place.

Alistair, on the other hand, did not look surprised at all.

He stood near the side of the bed with both of his hands jammed deep into his trousers pockets, his face locked into a carefully neutral expression. There was not a single trace of shock on his features. There was no confusion, no denial, and no sudden panic. It was painfully obvious that he had known about this long before we ever set foot in this building. His broad shoulders were relaxed, and his posture was calm, almost as if he had been patiently waiting for this exact moment to arrive all evening.

The nurse suddenly froze mid-step.

She must have finally picked up on the heavy, suffocating tension choking the room. She looked around at the dead silence, the dark, hostile stares, and the heavy weight of a massive family secret crashing down around her. The bright smile vanished from her lips, and her eyes darted nervously from one face to another. She looked like a terrified animal caught in the middle of a dark road, completely trapped in a nightmare she did not understand and desperately wanted to run away from.

Without uttering another word, she stepped forward and shoved the paper directly into Vesper’s waiting hands. The white sheet was crisp, heavy, and stamped with the official blue logo of the hospital lab at the top. The nurse’s fingers were trembling so hard that the paper rattled as she let go of it.

She turned on her heel and practically ran out into the hallway, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking

frantically against the clean floor as she fled. The heavy door swung shut behind her with a soft, final

click.

The silence that settled over the room after she left was completely deafening.

I stayed right where I was, frozen near the middle of the floor, watching the awful scene play out. The medical report was clutched in Vesper’s thin hands now, the corners of the paper fluttering slightly as she pressed the document against her chest. Her face was pale, her eyes were huge, and her lips were parted in a look of total shock. She looked like a person who had just been handed either a golden prize or a death sentence, and for the life of me, I could not tell which one she was trying to play up for us.

Beatrice moved before anyone else could react.

She crossed the small room in three fast, heavy steps, her heels clicking loudly against the hard floor. Her hand shot out like a lightning bolt, ripping the paper right out of Vesper’s grip before the younger woman could even think to pull it away. The thick paper made a sharp tearing sound as Beatrice pulled it back to her chest. She flipped through the pages at a frantic pace, her eyes scanning down the typed lines while her breath came in short, ragged gasps.

The whole room went dead quiet, save for the sound of shuffling paper and Beatrice’s harsh breathing.
