The Baby Bombshell
MARY’S POV:
Alistair squeezed his eyes shut and pulled his eyebrows together in frustration. His face was pale, and he looked completely exhausted and confused by how fast the night had turned on him. He kept his fists balled up at his sides, his knuckles totally white.
“Mom, how can you possibly say something so cruel right now?” he asked, his voice strained and angry.” Vesper has millions of fans who care about her. If everyone is suddenly turning their backs on her tonight, there has to be a real reason for it. This is not the time for you to be kicking her while she is down.”
Beatrice turned her head and stared at her son like he was a total stranger.
Her eyes went wide, her mouth set in a hard line, and her body went rigid. I saw the absolute shock on her face as she realized just how far gone her own son really was.
“Have you completely lost your mind?” she asked, her voice dropping into a hard, dangerous tone. “You are going to regret every single word that just came out of your mouth tonight, Alistair. But I do not have the energy to deal with your stupidity right now. Move out of my way.”
She reached out and forcefully shoved Alistair to the side. Her arms were strong, and the sudden push made him stumble backward two full steps onto the dirty floor. He opened his mouth to yell at her, but she did not even bother to look back at him as she stepped right up to the side of the hospital bed.
She stood directly over Vesper, her arms folded tight, her shadow completely covering the younger
woman’s pale face.
“Listen to me very carefully, young lady,” Beatrice said in a low, terrifying voice. “I am not the kind of person who goes around hitting other women. But if you do not keep your hands and your drama away from my son and my daughter-in-law from this moment on, I am going to make an exception just for you.”
Vesper’s eyes snapped open instantly.
I saw real, genuine fear flash through her face. She had been playing a game the whole night, but she finally realized that Beatrice was not playing along at all. Her fragile mask dropped completely, showing how scared she actually was of the older woman.
Vesper opened her mouth to say something back, but before a single word could come out, a soft knock sounded at the open door.
I turned my head toward the entryway.
A young hospital nurse was standing near the door frame, holding a white plastic clipboard against her chest. She had a warm, polite smile on her face, completely oblivious to the ruined food and broken glass covering the floor tiles. Her uniform was neat, and her hair was tied back in a clean bun. She looked down at her paperwork, then looked up at the bed with a cheerful expression.
“Miss Vesper?” the nurse asked in a clear, pleasant voice. “Your urgent prenatal lab results just came
