My Way Out

MARY’S POV:
I could see the tiny red recording light flashing on the back of his phone, and I noticed the clever angle he was holding the device at to make sure the camera captured everything happening near Vesper’s bed. The wide camera lens was pointed straight at her pale face, perfectly positioned to capture every single tear, every word, and every furious glance. He was lying through his teeth, and he knew for a fact that every person in the room knew it.
Vesper opened her mouth to snap at him, a mean insult clearly forming on the tip of her tongue. But before she could get a single word out of her throat, I turned around on my heel and slipped right out the open door into the hallway.
The long hospital corridor was surprisingly quiet now, the chaotic crowd from earlier having completely cleared out. The long fluorescent light strips humming overhead threw a cool, harsh glow over the shiny floor tiles. From far down the hallway, I could hear the quiet murmur of nurses talking at the front desk, the soft beeping of heart monitors behind closed doors, and the squeak of rubber shoes on the clean
floor.
I walked down the long hall as fast as my legs could carry me, my high heels clicking against the tiles while my fingers held tightly onto my phone. All the proof I needed was stored right inside that little device, voice recordings, clear video clips, and sharp photographs of Vesper’s fake performance, Alistair’s endless lies, and Beatrice’s absolute fury.
I had every single thing I needed.
Even if Alistair tried to deny the truth tomorrow morning, and even if he tried to use his wealth and power to scare local law firms into turning down my case, the upcoming divorce trial was going to end completely in my favor. I had hard evidence. I had real witnesses who had seen his behavior with their own eyes. And most importantly, I had his own mother on my side.
Beatrice had stood right there in that room and seen every dirty detail with her own eyes. She had witnessed her son’s constant lies, his cowardly manipulations, and the total lack of respect he had shown to the woman he had sworn to love for the rest of his life. She had watched Vesper’s dramatic act fall apart, seeing how the younger woman twisted facts to make herself look like an innocent victim. She had seen the lab report with her own eyes, realizing that Alistair had known about the pregnancy all along while trying his hardest to keep everyone quiet. If Beatrice chose to stand up in a courtroom and speak the truth for me, Alistair would never be able to force me to stay trapped in this fake marriage ever
again.
I walked right through the heavy glass sliding doors at the front entrance and stepped out into the dark. night air.
The large hospital parking lot was almost completely empty, with just a few scattered sedans sitting under the tall light poles like forgotten boxes. The late night wind blew cold against my hot cheeks, carrying the sharp smell of fresh rain water and wet pavement. The night sky above was pitch black, the stars completely hidden behind a thick layer of storm clouds.

I found my black car, the one we came with since I have the key, parked near the middle row, unlocked the driver door with a quick click of my key fob, and slid into the leather seat. The engine started up with a quiet, smooth hum, and the soft amber lights on the dashboard lit up the front interior of the car. I sat there in total silence for a minute, my cold hands gripping the steering wheel tight while my eyes stayed fixed on the brightly lit hospital entrance.
The tall glass building glowed in the dark night, looking warm and clean from the outside. Somewhere up on the fourth floor, my husband was standing by another woman’s bed, holding her hand and trying to calm her down. Somewhere up there, his mother was holding the paper that proved his total betrayal. And somewhere in that small room, the messy scandal was still exploding into big mess.
But for the very first time in months, I felt completely free.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I was finally stepping out from under his heavy thumb.
