A Heartless Performance
MARY’S POV:
Without losing a second, I reached out and grabbed his hand, trying with all my strength to pry my phone out of his thick fingers. My nails dug deep into his wrist, scratching his skin, while my breath came out in short, ragged gasps. I could feel the heat radiating off his skin and the stubborn tightness in his muscles as he refused to loosen his grip.
“You just ran your car right into my friend!” I screamed at him, my voice shaking uncontrollably with pure rage, And now you are refusing to let me call an ambulance for him? Are you seriously trying to murder him right here in the street?”
Alistair stood there staring down at me in absolute shock, his face darkening into a look of deep, dangerous anger The bright red mark on his left cheek stood out sharply against his pale skin, serve as a clear sign of the slap, I had just given him. His dark eyes narrowed into thin slits, his jaw clenching so hard that the muscles under his skin twitched violently.
“You actually dared to slap my face because of this random man?” his voice dropped into a low, terrifying growl, every single word dripping with barely controlled anger. “Is this the secret lover you have been sneaking around to see behind my back all these months?”
I could not even begin to process the insane words coming out of his mouth. My closest friend was lying completely motionless on the freezing pavement, bleeding heavily from his head, possibly dying right in front of us, and Alistair was standing there in the middle of the street demanding answers about a fake affair. His mind was so deeply twisted, so totally disconnected from normal human empathy, that I felt like I was trapped inside a horrific nightmare I could not wake up from.
I opened my mouth to scream at him, but before a single word could come out, a light sound reached my ears.
It was a quiet, cheerful voice, sounding completely amused and deeply familiar.
I turned my head toward the silver car.
Vesper was leaning her dark head right out of the open passenger window, watching the entire bloody mess with complete, undisguised delight. Her big eyes were sparkling with excitement, her lips curved up into a nasty little smirk, and her phone was already held up in her hand. The glass window had been rolled all the way down to the bottom, allowing the cold night air to blow her hair around her face. She looked like a person sitting comfortably in a dark movie theater watching an entertaining film, rather than someone looking at a life-threatening car accident.
She pointed her phone camera straight at us, snapped three quick photos of Hotch lying in his own blood on the street, and then hit the button to record a brief video clip. In a fake, high-pitched voice full of sudden terror, she whined into her phone, “Oh my goodness, who is this strange man standing outside our private driveway? Is he some kind of dangerous thief trying to break into the house? I am so terrified right now…”
She immediately tapped the screen to upload the video directly to her social media page.
