Twisting the Truth
MARY’S POV:
The exact second she finished posting the clip online, she completely dropped the scared act and shot me a cruel, victorious smile. Her eyes were icy cold and full of triumph, the look of a person who had just won a grand game without having to do any heavy lifting. Her fake mask of sweet helplessness had completely vanished into thin air; leaving behind the real, nasty woman underneath.
“How could you possibly treat Alistair so terribly right in front of everyone?” she asked me, her sweet voice dripping with fake concern. “That strange man came running straight onto our private property out of nowhere and got hit by our car, did he not? Or are you getting this wildly upset simply because your dirty little affair has finally been exposed to the world?”
Hearing her use the word affair pushed Alistair over the edge into a much darker, wilder rage.
I watched his face change completely, the violent fury building up behind his eyes like a storm. His large hands clenched into tight fists at his sides, his knuckles turning completely white from the pressure. He looked like an animal about to lose all control of himself, his breathing coming out short and raspy as his chest heaved up and down.
He reached out and forcefully shoved me to the side, his heavy shoulder slamming against my chest and sending me stumbling backward onto the driveway. My bare feet lost their grip on the slippery gravel, and I fell heavily onto my hands and knees, the sharp little rocks digging deep into my palms. I felt a sharp, stinging pain as the rough stones sliced through my skin, followed by the warm feeling of blood trickling out from the fresh cuts.
He raised my mobile phone high up into the air over his head, his hand gripping the plastic tightly while his face twisted into a look of pure hatred. For one long, terrible second, he held it suspended above his head, almost as if he were taking his time to enjoy the moment. Then he slammed the device down onto the hard concrete with all his strength.
The glass screen shattered into a million tiny pieces.
Black and clear glass fragments sprayed across the dark pavement, catching the faint yellow light of the streetlamps like tiny, broken diamonds. The ruined pieces lay scattered over the road, completely dark and lifeless. No matter how many times I stared at the broken mess, the phone was never going to turn back on again.
My phone was completely destroyed. My only way to call for help for my dying friend was gone.
What on earth am I supposed to do now? My mind panicked wildly.
I sat on my knees staring down at the shattered black glass, my thoughts spinning completely out of control while my heart pounded violently against my ribs. I could not call a doctor. I could not call the police. The phone was completely useless, Hotch was bleeding out on the cold street right behind me, and I had no way to save his life. The seconds were ticking away far too fast, every single breath bringing him closer to death.
Vesper was still talking from the car window, her light voice sounding mockingly sweet as she threw out insult after insult. I could hear her nasty comments drifting through the heavy fog of my panic, but I could not bring myself to process a single word she was saying. Her voice was just meaningless noise in the background, completely unimportant.
Then my eyes caught something crucial near the silver car.
The driver side window. Alistair had left it completely rolled down when he stepped out to confront me.
A wild, desperate idea suddenly flashed through my head. It was dangerous, completely reckless, and crazy, but it
