The Unwanted Wife's Return (Ex-Husband Wants Me Back) novel Chapter 409

An Impossible Divorce

ALISTAIR’S POV:

The bright morning sunlight poured right through the floor to ceiling glass windows of my corner office, throwing long, dark shadows across the clean marble floor. I sat still behind my heavy desk, my fingers laced together right in front of my face, while my eyes stayed fixed on the busy city skyline way out past the glass pane. The world outside was moving along at full speed, completely oblivious to the messy chaos that had been tearing my personal life apart for the past twelve hours.

I was still sitting there trying to process everything that had happened down at the general hospital. The terrifying scene in the hallway. The young nurse carrying that white paper. The sudden pregnancy test result. My mother’s absolute, screaming fury. That stupid blue-haired livestreamer with his stupid secondary phone and his arrogant, smiling face. The cold, distant way Mary had looked right into my eyes as if I were a complete stranger she had never met before in her entire life. And worst of all, the way she had turned around and walked straight out of that shared room without giving me a single backward glance.

However, I was still Alistair Vane. I was not the kind of man who sat around letting his life fall apart. I fixed things when they broke. I had always fixed every single problem that came my way. There was simply no financial problem I could not handle, and there was no situation in my personal life that I could not keep under complete control.

My chief financial officer, a nervous middle-aged man named Harrison who had been working for my family company for well over ten years, stood right in front of my desk clutching a dark leather folder tightly against his chest. His face looked completely pale, and tiny drops of cold sweat were forming all along his forehead. He looked exactly like a person who was stepping up to deliver a terrible piece of news that he knew would make me furious. His hands were shaking just a little bit, making the paper folder rattle in his grip.

“Sir,” he started off, his voice sounding completely hesitant and shaky, “if you end up going through a messy divorce with your wife right now, the major stock market launching of our new company is definitely going to take a massive hit. The primary investors are already feeling very nervous about the latest news. If any of them catch wind of any serious personal instability in your private life…”

I cut him off in an instant before he could even finish his sentence.

“Who on earth told you I was getting a divorce?”

The words snapped out of my mouth, loud, harsh, and full of total disbelief. I stared straight at his face, feeling completely baffled by his words. How had my own employees managed to jump to such a stupid, ridiculous conclusion? I had never mentioned the word divorce to anyone. I had never even given the idea a single second of thought. Mary was my legally married wife. She was always going to be my wife no matter what happened. The crazy idea of her packing her bags and leaving me was completely absurd, a ridiculous fantasy that made zero sense in the real world.

Harrison opened his mouth to try and explain himself, but I was not even close to finished speaking.

The head of our public relations team, an energetic woman named Pury who had handled our media images for five years, quickly took a step forward. She was usually very capable, quick on her feet, and always knew how to put out corporate fires before they spread. She looked like she was about to step in to explain the situation, trying to offer some kind of excuse for the wild rumors that were clearly floating around the building.

I cut her off with a quick wave of my hand as well.

“I do not pay you people massive salaries every month to come into my office and tell me bad jokes,” I told them, my voice dropping down into a cold, flat tone. “And I am not interested in hearing a single one of your long
