The Perfect Husband
ALISTAIR’S POV:
+15 Banus
Both of them just stood there completely frozen on the carpet, their faces turning ghost white. I could see the pure fear sitting in their eyes as they scrambled through their minds to find the right words to say to calm me down. Harrison opened his mouth and shut it like a fish out of water. Pury kept her hands clamped tight at her sides, her knuckles white.
I was completely done listening to their nonsense.
I leaned all the way back into my leather chair, narrowing my eyes as I stared out the window. First, Mary had shown me a crazy video clip that I had zero memory of ever filming, throwing a massive dramatic temper tantrum over it. Now my own top corporate executives were wasting my valuable time standing in my office discussing my marriage, getting every single detail totally wrong. The video had obviously been cut and edited together by someone who hated me. People were running around spreading endless lies. They were all working overtime to make me look like some kind of terrible villain.
Yet I had never once treated my wife poorly.
I had given her an incredible life, a massive house, endless money, and a high-standing family name. I had provided her with absolute social status, complete financial security, and a comfortable lifestyle that most ordinary women could only dream about having. She had never wanted for a single thing in her life. She had never been forced to work a real job, she had never had to stress over paying monthly bills, and she had never had to deal with the harsh, ugly realities of the real world. I had personally protected her from every bad thing out there for
years.
Why on earth would she ever want to divorce me? And why did every single person around me seem to think she was actually going to do it?
Someone had to be going around intentionally spreading these vicious rumors. But who was doing it? Was it one of her nosey old friends from school who felt jealous of the rich life she had with me? Was it some low-level staff member from the general hospital trying to stir up a public scandal for quick money? Or was it Vesper, quietly trying to push Mary out of the picture so she could take her place?
Or was Mary deliberately acting out in public to make it look like she was completely serious about leaving me? Was this whole dramatic act just some kind of twisted game, a clever manipulation tactic to grab my attention? She had always been very quiet and subtle, always knowing exactly which buttons to press to get a reaction out of me. Maybe this was just her desperate way of forcing me to pick her over everyone else.
That frustrating question stayed stuck inside my head for the entire car ride back to the house with Vesper.
