Straight at Me

ALISTAIR’S POV:
“If you do not want to get run over right now, get the hell out of my way!” she screamed out the window, her voice sounding sharp, wild, and desperate.
She would never actually step on the gas and hit me, I thought to myself with absolute confidence. She would never dare do something so terrible to me. She loved me far too much. She had always loved me with her whole heart. No matter what kind of stupid arguments we had gotten into tonight, and no matter how angry she felt in this moment, she was never going to bring herself to hurt me.
Yet Mary did not pause for a single fraction of a second.
The massive vehicle surged straight forward at full speed, heading right for my chest.
The blinding white headlights burned into my eyes. The large engine roared loudly. The heavy rubber tires squealed violently against the gravel stones. I could clearly see her pale face sitting behind the windshield glass, her jaw set tight with absolute determination as her hands gripped the wheel tight. There was not a single trace of fear sitting in her eyes. There was zero hesitation. She was actually going to run me down.
I tried to jump out of the way, but my legs were too slow…
Suddenly, a pair of strong hands grabbed my shoulders and yanked me violently to the side.
I stumbled backward onto the grass, my shoulder slamming hard against a broad chest. The silver car rushed right past my body, so close that I could feel the hot air radiating off the side doors and the wild rush of wind against my pants. I could smell the heavy exhaust fumes, the stink of burnt rubber, and the sharp smell of gasoline.
Someone had pulled me out of the way just in time.
It was Marl.
The second he pulled me out of the path of the car, he turned around and sprinted straight toward the swerving vehicle. I stood there watching him move across the driveway, his large body moving fast, smooth, and full of control. He raised his heavy arm and smashed right through the glass window, making the dark window explode into hundreds of shiny glass pieces. He reached inside, grabbed the frame, and pulled himself right through the broken door in one single move.
Just a few seconds later, the car screeched to a sudden, complete stop on the grass.
I let out a long, heavy breath of air. All the tight stress instantly drained out of my neck. Marl must have driven over to my house to help me handle that awful video clip that was floating around online. That was completely perfect timing. He could help me pin Mary down so she would stop acting like a lunatic. He was my close friend, my trusted legal ally, and the one reliable person I could always count on to fix
my mess.
I straightened my jacket and walked straight over to where he was standing.

“You managed to show up at the absolute best time,” I told him, my voice sounding quick and urgent. Some random guy broke onto my property and crashed right into my car. Mary has completely lost her mind and is trying to drive him to the emergency room. You need to…”
Before I could even finish my sentence, Marl reached out, grabbed me tightly by my suit collar with one hand, and lifted my entire body right up off the ground.
I was so completely stunned that I did not even try to fight back. My feet dangled uselessly in the cold air, my hands reaching up to touch his thick wrist while my mouth opened and closed without making a sound. My brain simply could not process what was happening to me. This was Marl. My close friend. The man who had attended all my expensive dinner parties, who had laughed at all my stupid jokes, and who had always been standing right behind me whenever I needed a favor.
