A Husband’s Rage
ALISTAIR’S POV:

The cold night air hit my face instantly, sharp and freezing. The long driveway was brightly lit by the glaring headlights of both damaged cars. I could clearly see the twisted side panel of the other vehicle, the crushed doors, and hundreds of tiny glass pieces scattered across the gray stones like glitter.
And then my eyes landed right on the man lying on the ground.
He was sitting crumpled up on the cold stones, his body completely still, with a thick pool of dark red blood slowly spreading out from under his dark hair. His face looked ghostly white, his eyes were tightly shut, and his chest was barely moving up and down. He was wearing a dark, expensive suit, the sort of tailored clothing that clearly showed he was some kind of wealthy professional.
I pulled my eyebrows together, narrowing my dark eyes. Who on earth was this guy? What was he doing sneaking around my private house in the middle of the night?
And then I heard a familiar voice screaming through the dark.
“Hotch!”
Mary came running out of the dark, dropping right down onto her knees beside the bleeding man, her shaking hands pressing down against his chest while her face twisted into a look of pure panic. She was just wearing a basic shirt and dark pants, her messy hair tied back loosely, her bare feet covered in gray gravel dust. Her fingers were trembling wildly, and her breath was coming out in short, terrified gasps.
The second she reached out and slapped my cheek hard because of this random stranger, absolute rage nearly ripped through my chest.
This random guy had broken onto my private property, caused a massive car accident with my vehicle, and now he was trying to act like he was close to my wife? He was sitting there on the ground, bleeding out and totally unconscious, and she was hovering all over him as if he were the most important person on the planet. As if his life mattered a hundred times more than mine did.
For one quick second, I genuinely wished the heavy car impact had killed him on the spot. It was completely his own stupid fault anyway, was it not? Even if we took our sweet time calling for an emergency ambulance and let him lay there suffering on the cold ground for a while, he deserved every single bit of it. He had trespassed on my land. He had caused this entire disaster. He had brought all of this pain onto his own head.
When I saw Mary frantically trying to drag the heavy, injured man toward my car door, I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs at her.
Why are you panicking like a lunatic right now? Why do you feel the stupid need to save his life all by yourself? What happens if he wakes up tomorrow and accuses you of causing his neck injuries? Do not you have a single grain of common sense left inside your head? You cannot just drag a heavily injured person around on the concrete like that. If he ends up dying in your arms, you could easily end up facing murder charges. You could be thrown into a dark prison cell. You could lose your daughter and your

entire life.
“If
you are so eager to see him die right here,” I told her, my voice sounding flat, cold, and dead, “then go right ahead and keep dragging his heavy body around in the street.”
The harsh words ripped right out of my mouth before I even had time to think about them. They sounded mean, cruel, and completely ruthless, the exact kind of nasty thing I would never normally say to my own wife. But I was so completely angry. I was deeply hurt. I was standing there watching my own wife choose a total stranger over her own husband, right in front of my face.
Mary did not even bother turning her head to look at me. She just pulled herself into my car and frantically tried to turn the ignition key to drive away.
I quick took three broad steps and stood directly in front of the heavy front bumper to block her from moving, wrapping my arms tightly over my chest.
